Super League XXVII – Saturday 23rd July Matches Tips and Betting Preview

A pivotal round of Super League matches continues on Saturday evening when the two French sides host English teams in a pair of matches which could play a significant role in determining so much come the end of the campaign.

Sadly neither of these matches are going to be on the TV in the UK so those of us on this side of the channel will have to rely on radio commentaries and social media updates to keep up with the happenings in both encounters.

Catalans Dragons vs Huddersfield Giants (17.00)

The opening match of the day sees an opportunity for the fourth placed Catalans Dragons and the third placed Huddersfield Giants to close in on second placed Wigan Warriors when the two sides meet in Perpignan.

Both these sides go into this match off the back of poor performances last week. The Dragons were humbled by the Salford Red Devils while Huddersfield were nilled by St Helens in a truly abysmal performance when you consider St Helens were a man light for 63 minutes after an early sending off. That means they both have something to prove in this match and when you consider what is at stake with the winner moving to either a point or two points of Wigan in second place this is a fairly easy one to swerve. You would imagine given their home form that the Dragons will win this but they’ve lost three of their last four so backing them to cover eight points doesn’t feel right but I’m not that keen on Huddersfield after last week, particularly with Tui Lolohea out.

Toulouse Olympique vs Salford Red Devils (19.00)

Two form teams meet in the second match of the day when Toulouse Olympique play host to the Salford Red Devils in a match which carries a lot of significance both to the play-off places and the battle to avoid the drop.

Toulouse have strengthened their chances of staying in the league with three successive wins, the latest coming last week against a depleted Leeds Rhinos side. If they can add another win to their tally here they will put Wakefield under a lot of pressure on Sunday. Toulouse aren’t the only team running hot though. Salford have won three of their last four matches with their latest win coming against the Catalans Dragons last week. A Salford win here will move them into the top six and I think they have it in them to get the job done here too. They are improving week on week and I think their half-back pairing of Brodie Croft and Marc Sneyd will be able to get them in good positions to exploit any weakness in the Toulouse defence. To be fair the Salford defence isn’t always the tightest but they kept Catalans to six points last week and can outscore a Toulouse side who are averaging less than 17 points per match despite their recent upturn.
