T20 World Cup 2021 – Bangladesh Team Guide and Betting Preview

Bangladesh had to navigate their way through the first round of the T20 World Cup 2021 to take their place in among the big boys. Although they had a rocky road in doing that, they did make it through and now they can consider themselves as dangers for the tournament. They have never made it through to the knockout stages of this event so that must now be their immediate aim.

Team Guide

Bangladesh have already had a rocky path to make it through to this stage having come up short against Scotland in their opening first round clash. To their credit they cruised past both Oman and Papua New Guinea to ensure they still lined up with the elite of the 20 over game but that fragility has to be a concern now they are in with the big guns. That said, they have prospered under pressure and there is a lot to be said for that.

One issue Bangladesh had going into the tournament was a lack of form with the bat. They had beaten Australia and New Zealand comprehensively in five-match T20 series but at no point did their batting really fire. The flip side of that is that their bowlers were on fire and we’ve certainly seen that continue in this tournament already. If that unit can stay strong for another five matches the door might just open for this Bangladesh side to create history for their nation.

Betting

When betting on the four teams who progressed through the first round we are obviously doing so not on a level playing field unlike the eight sides yet to get their campaign underway. Shakib-al-Hasan filled his boots with the bat and the ball against the minnows but I suspect he’s vulnerable to be heading both facets come the end of the event. In saying that, he’s three wickets ahead of Mustafizur but the latter is shorter than 2/1 to usurp him. I think it will happen but those odds don’t reflect the current state of play.

Things are a little more generous in the batting front where you could argue Shakib is more vulnerable because I think it is the weaker of his two suits in this format. He heads the way with 108 runs but his captain is only 18 runs behind him while Mohammad Naim is back on 64. Mahmudullah is a 3/1 shot to make up those 18 runs though and that feels like it could happen. Shakib is going to be coming up against some of the best new ball bowlers in the world in this group whereas Mahmudullah should be facing the change bowlers coming in at five. He has looked very good with the bat so far in this tournament with scores of 23, 17 and 50. Even when nobody was going well in the series with New Zealand prior to this one he managed scores of 37*, 43* and 23 so he’s in decent nick and the 3/1 he can swap places with Shakib will do me.
