T20 World Cup 2022 – Top Tournament Bowler Tips and Betting Preview

The T20 World Cup is now just hours away from getting underway. We have covered the tournament outright and the top batter market and before we get going in Geelong we have enough time to look at the top bowler offering.

As with the batters in the tournament, with the exception of a couple of bowlers who miss the competition through injury, the leading bowlers are going to be showcasing their skills here which makes for a very competitive market.

Profile

Just like with the batsmen, it is important to sort out what we are looking for in terms of style of bowler before we get involved in this market. Each team will have at least five bowling options so that is 80 bowlers to sift through. That isn’t sustainable so if we can whittle it down to a more manageable number that might help us track down the winner.

I think primarily we should be looking at seamers. I think we are looking at seamers here. We are early in the Australia summer and the pitches might have a little juice in them, especially as in most cases they have to cover double headers. Ones to consider are bowlers who bowl at the death but who can take the pace off the ball and pick up some cheap wickets, particularly if the lesser batsmen are at the crease by that stage.

Market

This is another market where the first round group stage is included so this time it might be worth picking someone from that because wickets tend to come in tight denominations so every extra match your player can play will be beneficial. Most bookmakers are paying four places as well which offers up some decent place terms to help us with our outright bets on the market.

Betting

I’ll go with three players in this market this time around. The first of those is Obed McCoy. He is the one I’m going to take from the opening groups. I’m not convinced West Indies come out of that group but if they do then they will take plenty of wickets at the end of the innings against teams who have got themselves into a hole and have to smack it to catch up. McCoy is expensive but that is because of where he bowls in the innings. He bowls in the powerplay and at the death and has a very well disguised slower ball as well as a good Yorker. If West Indies come out of the first group McCoy could take a lot of wickets.

Josh Hazlewood has converted himself into an excellent white ball bowler and with him likely to get plenty of assistance from the Australian wickets I think he is a big price to be the leading bowler in this tournament. On pitches which didn’t suit him as much as these will in the IPL, the Australian was the fifth highest wicket taker in that event. He has been in the wickets in the series against West Indies and England on home soil and at this time of year he should be in the wickets throughout this tournament. Hazlewood looks a leading contender in an Australian side I expect to go all the way.

I’ll also have a smaller punt on Sam Curran given how well he bowled in the two T20s against Australia last week. Curran took five wickets in the two matches he played and although he isn’t guaranteed to start for England, they have been searching for a death bowler for ages and that is where the Surrey man thrived in those games. He has a sneaky good bouncer and a slower ball which can catch batters out too. I really think death bowling is going to be worth an extra wicket to a bowler in this event and at a big price I’ll pay to see how Curran fares.
