It is the final day of The Masters on Sunday with the tournament playing to a close from the quarter final stage through to the champion inside the Marshall Arena in Milton Keynes on a day which could be massive for the eight players involved.
There isn’t just the title this week up for grabs but potentially a Premier League spot too so there is all to play for. The quarter finals take place in the afternoon which we will preview but the semi-finals and final aren’t until the evening and time restrictions will deny us the chance to cover those.
Dave Chisnall vs Michael Smith
The opening quarter final of the tournament sees two powerful scorers in action when Dave Chisnall takes on Michael Smith in what really looks like being a titanic tussle based on how the two men performed on Saturday.
Chisnall has played a couple of matches this weekend and only dropped four legs in total, offering up a barrage of scoring to overcome James Wade in the second round on Saturday. Chisnall has doubled well in the main and if he does that here he’ll be tough to beat. Smith has a point to prove this weekend though after losing out in the final of the World Championship and he certainly looked like he meant business when he powered past Krzysztof Ratajski on Saturday. He doesn’t look to have lost any of his form and we’re hoping that continues to be the case because we are on him outright on Sunday. The bet I like here though is for Smith to hit more than 6.5 180s at an odds against price. He hit eight against Ratajski in a match where he won’t have had much rhythm. There will be a better flow to this one and I fancy the 180s will flow from Smith as a result.
Gerwyn Price vs Jonny Clayton
The second quarter final of the competition sees the two Welsh stars going at it once again when Gerwyn Price looks to remind everyone why he is the world number one when he meets the defending champion Jonny Clayton.
These two have been familiar foes in recent times and they usually always deliver great matches. Price made it here by beating a Ryan Searle who is starting to make me question whether he can beat the truly big names on the stage. Clayton took care of Dimitri Van den Bergh in an epic contest on Saturday and if he has that form here he is going to be hard to beat. I think Price needs to raise his game to come past Clayton here but he isn’t going to be helped any by the crowd and that added to the fact that Clayton isn’t going to give his title up without a fight makes me think ‘The Ferret’ is the man here.

Simon Whitlock vs Jose de Sousa
Two men who needed a decent weekend to make up for relatively poor years on the big stage in 2021 meet in the penultimate quarter final when Simon Whitlock takes on Jose de Sousa for a place in a televised semi-final.
Both men took care of world champions on Saturday with Whitlock dethroning the current one in Peter Wright and de Sousa seeing off an out of sorts Rob Cross who made a costly counting error at the halfway mark. You would imagine de Sousa will push on and win this one with the class that he has but Whitlock is playing with the house money having only got in when Danny Noppert pulled out and that relaxation and pressure free approach could yet see him go deeper. I’m happy to watch this one.
Michael van Gerwen vs Joe Cullen
The last of the quarter finals revokes memories of the World Championship of last year as Michael van Gerwen takes on Joe Cullen in what will be a repeat of one of the best matches that has ever been seen at Alexandra Palace.
Van Gerwen should be on his way home now but Luke Humphries bungled a number of chances to beat him and you just wonder whether the Dutchman will free up and allow his best form to come out now. It might need to because he takes on a Joe Cullen who has only lost three legs in beating Daryl Gurney and Gary Anderson so far in the competition and who looks really good at the minute. There is still a sense in my mind that as the pressure increases Cullen will be found wanting but with the way MVG has played over the last 15 months or so I wouldn’t be completely surprised if ‘Rockstar’ wins this. I’m not a fan of backing him though and I can’t be backing van Gerwen at the minute so this is easily swerved too.
