The final day of the PGA Tour season is all set up to be a highly exciting one as a number of top stars aim to win the Tour Championship on Sunday and potentially the huge pot of cash that goes with it.
Henrik Stenson saw his lead wiped out on a dank and dismal day on Saturday with the man surely the player of the year in waiting Jordan Spieth the man to overtake him.
Spieth goes into the final round leading on eight under. He is one shot ahead of Henrik Stenson and then there is a mini group four back from the pace which includes our pre-tournament pick Rickie Fowler and Paul Casey. Rory McIlroy and Zach Johnson are a shot further back on three under with just JB Holmes, Bubba Watson and Justin Rose the only other players under par.
Spieth is now an odds on favourite to win the title. He can be taken at no bigger than 5/6 to win his sixth title of the season but we shouldn’t write off Stenson yet. He is only a shot back and is 9/4 to land the pot of cash. It looks a two horse race although Rickie Fowler might still have a say at 16/1.
For the final time this week the players will go out in pairs in the final round and the leading group of Spieth and Stenson go out at 6.45pm UK time. The other appealing groups are the one between the last two winners of The Open in Rory McIlroy and Zach Johnson while there is a big hitting pair of Bubba Watson and JB Holmes teeing it up too.
I’m going to centre my attention on the final pairing where I happen to think that Stenson is a big price to see off Spieth. Stenson’s tee to green game has been so much better than Spieth’s this week and I sense that could make a difference in the long and damp conditions on Sunday.
Spieth performed some miracle up and downs to keep bogeys off his card on Saturday but he can’t keep on doing that on a course as demanding as this. Stenson just needs to get a couple more putts to the hole and he’s right in this and at even money without the tie in place he’s my bet for the final day.
