The quarter finals of the US Open begin in New York on Tuesday and we have reached the stage of the competition where the remaining singles matches will all take place on the main Arthur Ashe Stadium which always increases the attention on any event.
We’ve seen both singles draws open right up in the opening four rounds of the tournament to the point that none of the eight players on show on Tuesday have won a Grand Slam singles title before. That is sure to ensure some competitive action throughout the course of the day.
Day Session
Matteo Berrettini vs Casper Ruud
The opening quarter final of the US Open sees two former Grand Slam finalists battling it out for a place in the last four when the Italian ace Matteo Berrettini goes up against the Norwegian star Casper Ruud.
These two men are two of the better players in the world. Ruud is three wins away from being the number one ranked player in the world and although Berrettini is only seeded 13 here that is because he lost the points from the Wimbledon final last year and couldn’t compete in the French Open either. He is a lot better than the rankings would suggest. Ruud holds a 3-2 lead in the previous meetings between these two but it is Berrettini who won their only hard court meeting which was here a couple of seasons ago when the Italian prevailed 64 64 62. I’m not one of those who thinks Ruud is just a clay court player but I do think these faster conditions are much more suited to the bomb of a serve and big forehand of Berrettini and I also think that missing the last two Slams has fuelled the fire of the Italian. He is a former semi-finalist here so loves the New York conditions and although you can only beat what is in front of you, Ruud has had a very comfortable draw this week and not exactly blown it out of the park. Berrettini went five in the last round but he’s had enough time to recover and should take this one down.
Ons Jabeur vs Ajla Tomljanovic
The day session quarter final from the women’s draw sees the Wimbledon finalist Ons Jabeur looking to make it through to successive Grand Slam semi-finals when she meets the woman who the last time she was on Ashe ended the career of Serena Williams in Ajla Tomljanovic.
Tomljanovic deserves a lot of credit and respect in this tournament. After a couple of patchy displays in the first two rounds she went toe-to-toe with Serena and came out on top and then took down the form horse of Liudmila Samsonova in the previous round, although the Russian sunk quickly having failed to serve out the opening set of that match. Jabeur cruised through against Veronika Kudermetova in the previous round and has the variety to cause Tomljanovic problems as the 2-0 head to head suggests but they were both on a clay court. Tomljanovic rarely does straightforward matches and if I had to bet on this one I would be looking at the over in games but my gut feeling there isn’t strong enough to merit a bet.

Night Session
Coco Gauff vs Caroline Garcia
The opening match in the night session looks an absolute cracker as it is the women who get things started when the French Open finalist Coco Gauff takes on the recent winner in Cincinnati in Caroline Garcia for a place in the semi-final against the winner of the earlier women’s match.
Gauff has looked pretty good in this tournament but Garcia looks to be playing tennis from the gods right now. She is cracking an insane amount of winners and while there are unforced errors with it with how much she pushes the boundaries, the French woman is putting a lot of pressure on her opponents. While Gauff is playing well, her athleticism is getting her out of a few holes. The problem for the teenager is everyone knows her forehand and second serve are weak and I expect Garcia to feast on that in this match. Bookmakers seem well aware of the situation as well though and the Cincinnati champion is odds on to win this one. That doesn’t interest me but I wouldn’t want to take Garcia on in present form so I’ll leave this one alone.
Nick Kyrgios vs Karen Khachanov
The final match of a decent looking day on the Arthur Ashe Stadium on Tuesday sees the exciting Nick Kyrgios looking to make it through to a second successive Grand Slam semi-final when he takes on the Olympic silver medallist from last year in Karen Khachanov.
Kyrgios blew the draw wide open on Sunday night when he took care of Daniil Medvedev and it looks like the penny has dropped with the Australian and he is merging his insane talent with a professional attitude which is yielding dividends. Khachanov is sneakily playing well himself though and he came out on top of an absolute epic against Pablo Carreno Busta in the last round. These two have shared their two meetings with each of them going to a deciding set and while I’m not convinced this one will go to a fifth set, I’m fully aware that six of their eight sets have gone to a tiebreak including four of the five they played in the Australian Open two years ago. These two both serve pretty well and so I’m very surprised the game line is 35.5 here. We might not even need a fourth set for that to cover but I don’t see this being won any easier than that so I’m happy to take the over here.
