It is a quiet day at the US Open on Thursday with just the two ladies semi-finals being played as far as singles are concerned and they both take place in the night session. At the end of the evening we will know the identity of the two women who will compete in Saturday’s final.
The four women left in the tournament have all played some sparkling tennis en route to the semi-finals so we know they are playing well so this should be an evening of high quality.
Serena Williams vs Karolina Pliskova
Surprisingly the world number one is first up on Thursday. I say surprisingly because Serena only came through her quarter final at 9.30pm local time on Wednesday and that was a really physical battle with Simona Halep and being back on court less than 24hrs later isn’t ideal.
Karolina Pliskova won’t mind though. She had her titanic tussle in the last 16 when she went to a final set tiebreak with Venus Williams in one of the best matches we’ve seen in this fortnight. She breezed through her quarter final and should be bang on it for this match.
Those who followed us right at the start of the tournament will be on Pliskova to win this match at around 16/1 as we backed her outright and rather than taking her again we’ll kick back and hope that Serena’s heavy night will have taken its toll and the Czech can reach her first major final.
Caroline Wozniacki vs Angelique Kerber
The surprise package against the form horse in the second semi-final. Caroline Wozniacki has seen off some decent players so far in this tournament including Svetlana Kuznetsova and Madison Keys and to be fair to her she has looked awesome in doing it but this will be her toughest test.
Angelique Kerber is playing some outstanding tennis at the minute. She is moving well, serving nicely and her groundstrokes are full of placement and power and just looking at her game and the shape it is in this week it is no surprise to anyone that she is not only two wins from a second Grand Slam title of the year but also the coveted world number one spot.
I’ve enjoyed watching the Dane in this tournament but for me Kerber’s quality has stood out like a beacon. I don’t see Wozniacki having the power to keep Kerber at bay and while she runs everything down I believe there is only so long she can do that form. I’m expecting the German to win this and win it well.
