If the women’s final for the US Open contained two surprise packages the men’s equivalent certainly doesn’t as the two best players in the world prepare to battle for the 42nd time on Sunday night when Novak Djokovic takes on Roger Federer.
Djokovic will be looking for an insanely good third Grand Slam title of the year in this match while Federer will be looking to end a Slam drought which dates back to 2012 so both men will be highly motivated here.
Novak Djokovic eased into this final losing just three games in his semi-final win over the man he seems to have in a spell these days in Marin Cilic. Prior to that though the world number one hadn’t looked at his best but he’ll know he will need his best tennis with him in this final.
Roger Federer was arguably more impressive in his semi-final win over his countryman Stan Wawrinka. While there were claims that Cilic was injured against Djokovic which gave the scoreline a one sided feel Wawrinka was just outclassed by Federer in a really strong performance.
There hasn’t been a round in this tournament where Djokovic has looked better than Federer so now it is purely down to Federer and his mindset. If he truly believes he can beat Djokovic and plays the same style and tactics he has been using I don’t see him losing this.
Federer took Djokovic to the cleaners in their last meeting which was in the final of Cincinnati three weeks ago and the way he is serving he is going to be very hard to beat here. I backed Federer outright before a ball was hit in this tournament though so I don’t need to get involved again in the match betting as I do believe Federer will win.
One bet I am prepared to take in this final is for there to be fewer than 43.5 games. That line is going to need at least four sets to cover it and even then it is probably going to need a couple of tie-breaks or close sets and I’m not sure we’ll get that. I think there might be a couple of one sided sets in this final and I’m not actually sure it goes deep anyway.
That line looks a little high to me and while we all hope this will be a tight, epic, classic final after two disappointingly one sided semi-finals I’m going to back against it being that.
