As ever with the WDF World Darts Championship, it isn’t all about the men as the women have their own competition with 24 of the leading ladies in the game heading to the Lakeside Country Club in Surrey looking to land the biggest piece of silverware in the game.
Beau Greaves did that for the second time a year ago and the superstar of the women’s game is back to look to defend her title even though she could have been competing in the PDC World Championship. The field will probably end up wishing she took that offer up.

The Format
24 women will line up in the competition with the eight seeds progressing to the second round. The 16 unseeded players will battle it out in the first round for the right to face a seed in the last 16. The first and second rounds are the best of three sets as are the quarter finals. The semi-finals go up to the best of five sets and then the champion will be crowned for the first time over the best of seven sets. All 24 players have already been slotted into the draw. As with the men’s event, each match will be on the WDF YouTube channel.
Top Half
The defending champion and comfortably the best player in the women’s game, Beau Greaves, is the top seed in the draw and is right at the top of the bracket this week. Three other seeds probably wish they were in the other half of the draw. Deta Hedman is the next highest seed and those two could meet in the semi-final while the New Zealand pair of Nicole Regnaud and Desi Mercer will be hoping to be the ones to cause major upsets.
There are eight qualifiers in each half of the draw too and the main one in the top half is the former finalist Kirsty Hutchinson. Veronika Ihasz is another who has been here before who is in this part of the draw while another Kiwi in Wendy Harper will be looking to make some progress too. Anca Zijlstra is no stranger to the Lakeside stage either while Finland will be represented by Kirsi Viinikainen and Hungary by Greta Tekauer.

Bottom Half
The bottom half looks much tastier than the top half and certainly potentially a lot more competitive. Aileen de Graaf is the second seed for the week and she is the main seed in the bottom half. She is on a collision course with Rhian O’Sullivan in what would be a cracking semi-final. The other two seeds hoping to ensure that doesn’t happen are Aletta Wajer and the German star Irina Armstrong for whom a semi-final spot would have to be considered an upset.
There are eight more qualifiers in the bottom half of the draw and the standout one among them is very much the former champion Lisa Ashton who is going to be a nightmare draw for as long as she is in the competition. Veteran players Paula Murphy and Paula Jacklin are both in the draw as well while Lorraine Hyde has competed on the Lakeside stage before. Mikuru Suzuki put Japanese darts on the map in this event in the past and Mayumi Ouchi will be their representative here.
Betting
I was hoping that someone would put an each way market up so we could at least get some sort of return for being beaten by Beau Greaves in the final but there isn’t one so we’re going to need to hope that someone can cause arguably the biggest upset in the history of this tournament. I’ll just keep stakes small but I’ll look to find the player to come through the other half of the draw to give Greaves as long as possible to get knocked out.
Rhian O’Sullivan is playing in the Modus Series this week so she certainly won’t be short of match practice for when she arrives at the Lakeside and the aggressive scorer and solid finisher is my idea of the player to come through the bottom half of the draw, largely because of the potential quarter final between Lisa Ashton and Aileen de Graaf which would be hard to call. O’Sullivan made the final of the World Masters and has been to the final here twice in the past. She has been beaten in the semi-final in the last two years, last year by Greaves, but her run can go one better here and hope we don’t meet Greaves in the final.
