The first round of the singles action will conclude on the lawns of the All England Club as the second day of Wimbledon takes place across SW19 on Tuesday with the other halves of the draw taking place on what looks a high class day.
We get to see the likes of Roger Federer, Serena Williams, Ash Barty, Rafael Nadal and Angelique Kerber and so many more stars taking to the courts on what should be a truly special Tuesday with the quality on show.
Day 1 Recap
We saw some great tennis on the opening day and then we saw some big upsets as well so it was a really good start to the tournament. There were easy wins for the likes of Novak Djokovic, Stan Wawrinka, Kevin Anderson as well as Simona Halep, Karolina Pliskova, Sofia Kenin and Caroline Wozniacki. Elsewhere there were huge shocks with the demise of Naomi Osaka, Alexander Zverev and Stefanos Tsitsipas. Venus Williams was also a surprise loser to the talented Cori Gauff.
It was a level ball for us betting wise with two winners on the day and two losers. We had an easy win for Aliaksandra Sasnovich who lost to Simona Halep but easily cleared the 5.5 game handicap while Miomir Kecmanovic came from a set down to cover his handicap. We weren’t so fortunate with Nicolas Jarry while Jelena Ostapenko decided to battle herself and her opponent and that was never going to end well.

Centre Court
As is tradition the ladies champion gets the action underway on the main court on Tuesday which means that Angelique Kerber will begin her title defence when she plays her fellow German player Tatjana Maria. The eight-time winner Roger Federer is then back on the court he could call his second home when he faces Lloyd Harris before the action on the main court is rounded off when Serena Williams looks to star again. She faces the unknown Italian player Giulia Gatto Monticone for a place in the second round.
Court 1
If the line up is good on Centre Court it is not bad on Court 1 either. The world number one and French Open champion Ash Barty opens up the show. She meets the Chinese woman Saisai Zheng before the British number one Jo Konta steps onto the court to get her campaign underway. She takes on Ana Bogdan of Romania before the only men’s match on show here finishes off the action. That sees Rafael Nadal taking on Yuichi Sugita for a place in the second round.
Court 2
The Graveyard Court lived up to its reputation on Monday and Sloane Stephens is the first seed looking to avoid the curse on Tuesday when she begins the action. She faces Timea Bacsinszky before one of the big matches of the first round takes place as Dominic Thiem goes up against the Eastbourne finalist Sam Querrey. Maria Sharapova is then back on the big stage when she meets Pauline Parmentier before the last match on the card sees the loser of that epic semi-final 12 months ago, John Isner, taking on the talented rising star Casper Ruud from Norway.
Court 3
Nick Kyrgios is the first big name on show on Court 3 on Tuesday. All eyes will be on him to see if he can beat his countryman Jordan Thompson to set up a meeting with Rafael Nadal before the former ladies champion Garbine Muguruza faces Beatriz Haddad Maia. Another former champion then takes to the court when Petra Kvitova returns from injury to face Ons Jabeur with the one remaining match of this court seeing the 2017 finalist Marin Cilic going up against Adrian Mannarino. You would have to say this is one of the best first round cards we’ve seen on any court in recent times at Wimbledon.

Best of the Rest
Such is the quality of the players and the matches on show on Tuesday, the likes of Kei Nishikori can only be scheduled for Court 12. Kiki Bertens is also out on that court while Belinda Bencic and Fabio Fognini are down on Court 18. Gilles Simon, Jan-Lennard Struff, Elise Mertens, Matteo Berrettini, Denis Shapovalov and Lucas Pouille are just some of the other seeds who will be competing around the grounds on Tuesday.
Men’s Betting
There are a couple of men’s outsiders that I like the look of on Tuesday. The first one is in that big clash between Dominic Thiem and Sam Querrey where the Eastbourne finalist is my pick. Thiem is not great on grass and his record here is ordinary, in contrast to the American who has made the semi-final here and a quarter final prior to that as well. I was a bit concerned over the state of Querrey having missed the clay court season through injury so his run at Eastbourne was encouraging. Thiem might not disappear quickly but I do expect the grass court credentials of Querrey to win the day here.
Cristian Garin has flown up the world rankings this year courtesy of a fair few good performances on the clay but I don’t see his game naturally transferring to the grass as well and as such it could be worth taking a shot on Andrey Rublev to see him off. The Russian really hasn’t kicked on from making the quarter final of the US Open in 2017 but that run showed he does at least have a game hiding somewhere and he might have the right opponent to show it against here. If this was on clay, or possibly even on hard I would be going nowhere near it but on grass Rublev is a chance.
Women’s Betting
I like two in the women’s draw as well with the first actually on a British woman. I don’t usually back Brits because all too often they stink the place out but Katie Swan has a plum draw here against Laura Siegemund who last played on grass back in 2016 which is pretty remarkable. Swan hasn’t been winning many matches in this grass court season but the ones she has played she has been very competitive in. Siegemund has never won a match at Wimbledon and doesn’t have the best Grand Slam record anywhere given that he has been as high as 27 in the world in the past. She’s nowhere near that level now and looks vulnerable to the young Brit.
I’ll also take a punt on Ons Jabeur to see off Petra Kvitova. I can’t hide the fact that the Tunisian pulling out of her last two events with injury isn’t ideal but she’s playing a Kvitova who hasn’t played since Rome because of injury. Kvitova is a class act, we saw that back in Australia at the start of the season, but it would be natural if it took her a tournament or so to get going again. Jabeur beat Jo Konta in Eastbourne last week before pulling out ahead of her semi-final with Angelique Kerber. She won a grass court challenger event last year so he likes the grass and is overpriced to see off a rusty Kvitova.
