The first round will hopefully conclude and the second round will get underway on the third day of action at Wimbledon on Wednesday as the tournament continues to attempt to catch up after a heavy delayed two days to start the week.
The tournament might only be around two thirds of the way through the first round but the drama, tension and storylines have been coming thick and fast and that is set to continue again on Wednesday on a day where we are guaranteed to see the likes of Andy Murray, Novak Djokovic, Aryna Sabalenka and Elina Svitolina.
Day 2 Recap
It was a dramatic second day of the tournament on Tuesday, one which saw Roger Federer escape an upset when Adrian Mannarino pulled out injured at the end of the fourth set while Serena Williams wasn’t so lucky when she had to retire with injury during the first set. Elsewhere there were wins for Daniil Medvedev, Alexander Zverev, Ash Barty, Angelique Kerber, Coco Gauff and Denis Shapovalov. Alex de Minaur was another seed who lost.
Once again it was another day where our bets didn’t all get on the court but those which did we ended up with three winners and one loser. The loser was the heldover match from Monday as Tamara Zidansek was competitive against Karolina Pliskova but couldn’t get the better of her. Of the bets we placed on the Day 2 preview we had Ludmilla Samsonova winning well enough to cover the handicap while the over landed in the match between Jan-Lennard Struff and Daniil Medvedev as it did in the Nick Kyrgios and Ugo Humbert match which is yet to finish.
Centre Court
It is the second round all the way on the Centre Court on Wednesday and it begins with the defending men’s champion Novak Djokovic. He takes on the South African player Kevin Anderson in a repeat of the 2018 final. When they are done the second seed in the women’s draw Aryna Sabalenka will be back on show. She takes on the British player Katie Boulter before the biggest named Brit of the lot steps back onto the main court when Andy Murray faces Oscar Otte who went to a fifth set tiebreak in the first round.
Court 1
There is a mixture of first and second round matches on Court 1 on Wednesday. We begin with the first round stuff as the 2019 semi-finalist Elina Svitolina goes up against Alison Van Uytvanck before the conclusion of the fantastic match between Nick Kyrgios and Ugo Humbert. Then we are into the second round as the British number one Dan Evans takes on Dusan Lajovic before the action concludes with Ons Jabeur taking on the former champion Venus Williams.
Court 2
We also have a mixture of first and second round matches over on Court 2 on Wednesday as well with the first round getting us started obviously. It starts with the former US Open champion Bianca Andreescu taking on Alize Cornet of France in a good looking match. Once they are done Lucas Pouille and Cameron Norrie will be back out to finish their first round contest before Felix Auger-Aliassime takes on Thiago Monteiro. Two second round matches finish off the day when the former French Open champion Iga Swiatek faces the veteran Vera Zvonereva before Madison Brengle goes up against Sofia Kenin.
Court 3
It is the same situation on Court 3 on Wednesday as first and second round matches make up the card. They begin with the Queens champion Matteo Berrettini going up against Guido Pella before Fernando Verdasco takes on Grigor Dimitrov. Belinda Bencic is the star in the last of the first round matches. She meets Kaja Juvan before the only second round match sees Lesley Pattinama Kerkhove taking on Garbine Muguruza.

Best of the Rest
It is a packed schedule on the outside courts on Wednesday which means there are plenty of seeds dotted around the grounds. Casper Ruud, Gael Monfils, Victoria Azarenka and Diego Schwartzman are all on Court 12 while over on Court 18 we have John Isner, Marin Cilic, Andrey Rublev and Karolina Pliskova. Lorenzo Sonego, Petra Martic, Paula Badosa, Karen Khachanov, Daria Kasatkina and Fabio Fognini are just some of the other seeds who will be on show over the course of the day.
Men’s Betting
I’ve still got the bet on Sam Querrey running throughout play on Wednesday but I’m going to add one to that and it comes in the form of Mikael Ymer to see off a Jo-Wilfried Tsonga who I actually like as a whole and was good to watch in the past but the past looks to have very much caught up with him both in terms of age and injuries. He goes to Wimbledon having lost 10 of his last 11 matches which is obviously a horrendous run of form.
That isn’t the case with Ymer. He comes here off the back of a decent enough French Open and he won a couple of matches on the grass last week and although they were only qualifying matches wins are wins and clearly Tsonga hasn’t had many of them recently. This is one of those matches where we have a player on the down at the end of his career against a rising star who is making his way in the game. Usually the latter option comes through and I’ll back that to be the case here.
Women’s Betting
There is only one I like in the women’s draw on Wednesday too with everything a little all over the place after the rain. The bet I like is for under 21.5 games in the match between Madison Brengle and Sofia Kenin, a match which I think Kenin can win with ease if she is on a going day. I’ll take this bet rather than the -4.5 game handicap though because obviously this gives us the 6-4 6-4 on our side which is important.
Kenin looked decent enough in the opening round here and having won a title in Mallorca a couple of years ago we know that she can play on the grass. Brengle has never really impressed on the lawns anywhere and she had a right battle in the first round here, She won 10-8 in the third set in a match which went past 2 hours 40 minutes and had to be finished on Tuesday after it got too dark on Monday. That is all going to impact in the recovery and things like that and although this match doesn’t take place until later in the day I still think it tips the balance firmly in the hands of Kenin.
