The rain continues to create all sorts of havoc at SW19 and it has now been announced that for the first time since 2004 and only the fourth time in Wimbledon history there will be play on the Middle Sunday as the organisers look to catch up with the schedule after the rain.
Another day of heavy delays on Friday meant we still haven’t finished the second round so the event will catch up the remaining matches on the extra day on Sunday which is excellent news for punters and tennis fans alike.
Friday Recap
It was a quiet day for us on Friday in many ways with none of our bets for the day even seeing the tennis court let alone coming through for us so they are all part of Saturday’s schedule now.
What was a quiet day for us was a hugely dramatic day for the action that did take place. We lost the fourth seed Stan Wawrinka who was dumped out on Centre Court by Juan Martin del Potro and we could be losing the biggest seed of them all as a flat Novak Djokovic trails Sam Querrey two sets to nil overnight.
On the women’s side Serena Williams looked in some trouble as she was taken the distance and at one stage she was a break down in the third set but she came through in the end. Svetlana Kuznetsova also had to go three sets to come past British hope Tara Moore. Venus Williams was another who went three sets.
Elsewhere there were easy wins for Roger Federer, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, John Isner, Tomas Berdych and Carla Suarez-Navarro among others as they progressed to the next stage of the tournament.
Centre Court
The action on Centre on Saturday begins with the clash between Simona Halep and Kiki Bertens which was held over from Friday. Andy Murray follows on from there as he takes on John Millman and then Jack Sock and Milos Raonic go head to head in another match which was held over from Friday.
Court 1
The climax of the intriguingly poised Novak Djokovic vs Sam Querrey match is first up on this court which begins an hour earlier at 12 noon. Alize Cornet goes up against Madison Keys in the following match before Nick Kyrgios takes on Feliciano Lopez to round up the day’s action on the second show court.
Court 2
Angelique Kerber’s match with Carina Witthoeft gets things underway on Court 2 and that is followed by the conclusion of Petra Kvitova and Ekaterina Makarova with the real big match between Dominika Cibulkova and Eugenie Bouchard on after that. John Isner takes on Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the last match on this court.
Court 3
Andrey Kuznetsov and Kei Nishikori finally get underway first up on Court 3 having waited all day to get on court on Friday to no avail. David Goffin and Denis Istomin follow them before the women’s third seed Agnieszka Radwanska takes on Katerina Siniakova in the last of the singles matches out there.
Best of the Rest
As has been the case all week so far there are some big names on the outer courts making up the schedule. Marin Cilic, Juan Martin del Potro, Lucie Safarova, Richard Gasquet, Sabine Lisicki and Bernard Tomic are among those looking to entertain those with ground passes.
Betting
With three bets already running for us on Saturday I’m not going to go too mad with extra bets but there are a couple of prices and lines which look to offer a bit of value which I’ll get stuck into. Before I go into those I was nearly tempted by the 13/8 about Sam Querrey to see off Novak Djokovic.
That is a big price for a man who is 2-0 up in sets going into Saturday and had the match finished on Friday night I have absolutely no doubt that Querrey would have won it but a lot can change overnight and Djokovic has history of coming back from 2-0 down in this event. He did it to Kevin Anderson last year so I’ll tentatively leave it safe in the knowledge that if Djokovic gets beat it opens it right up for Andy Murray who I’m on outright.
In the men’s draw the 13/8 on Nick Kyrgios and Feliciano Lopez ending their first set in a tie-break looks a little big to me. The two have only played on two previous occasions with Lopez winning both matches but the set scores in those games is what catches my eye.
Lopez won both matches 2-0 but three of the four sets went to a tie-break and on grass you would think the likelihood of them playing out another one to begin with here is quite high. Neither have what you would call an excellent return game so I’m expecting the serve to dominate throughout not just the start so I’ll jump all over that 13/8.
In the women’s draw I’m looking forward to the match between Dominika Cibulkova and Eugenie Bouchard. Bouchard has won both the previous meetings between these two and they have both come in the last 12 months. Both matches went to a third set and I’m not expecting much different here.
Bouchard showed she was hitting the ball nicely when she beat Jo Konta in the previous round while Cibulkova has continued where she left off at Eastbourne so I’m expecting a really good and exciting match between two quality hitters and one which sails past 21.5 games in total.
Tips
