A good looking day in the World Cup on Thursday gets underway with the Group C clash between Denmark and Australia in Samara with both sides wanting the three points ahead of the final round of games.
Denmark somewhat fortunately won their opening match and will be in a very good position if they can win this one while Australia were on the wrong end of things in their first game and must avoid defeat to remain in the competition.
Denmark
If ever there was a match which showed the power of being clinical it was the first one that Denmark played against Peru. Denmark were overrun and to be fair at times outclassed but their keeper had a great day and their defence stayed solid and when the chance came at the other end they found the back of the net with it.
You couldn’t call it a good performance from Denmark and moving forward I think they will have to produce much more in their attacking play but they have a win on the board and they are on control of their own destiny from here on in which is pretty important. If they can find a bit of attacking flair then that combined with their resoluteness at the back could see them go far.
Australia
You could tell Australia wanted to go forward and commit men into attacks in their opening match but then at the same time it was fairly obvious that they were scared to do so because of the threat that they were up against. In the end it was an acceptable performance from them and on another day they might even have got something from the game.
I would expect to see a bigger attacking commitment from Australia in this game. They need to show that anyway because they need to get something from the match but also they are unlikely to be hurt going the other way by Denmark, especially if they can keep Christian Eriksen quiet. One issue could be that they might not have much joy from crosses against a solid Danish back line.
Team News
Denmark are expected to be forced into one change with William Kvist exiting the first match on a stretcher. Lasse Schone could be his replacement. Jonas Knudsen is back in the squad after flying home straight after the opening game.
Australia may well consider whether it is worth unleashing Tim Cahill on the match from the start to see if he can rough up this strong looking Denmark defence. Daniel Arzani came off the bench against France and could be in contention.

Betting
I’m expecting a pretty tight match here. Australia lack the craft and guile to break down or open up this Denmark defence while a draw does Denmark absolutely no harm so I wouldn’t be expecting them to commit too many men forward as and when they go forward.
Australia handled the French attack effectively enough and there is no way this Denmark forward line is going to be any more dynamic than that one was so everything being equal I’m finding it hard to see where this game catches fire in truth. I’ll gladly take under 2.25 goals in this one.
