World Cup Qualifying – Thursday 31st August European Matches Betting Preview

The World Cup Qualifiers return this week with two more rounds of matches in the European campaign. They begin on Thursday evening when three groups are in action. That means 18 sides will be looking to pick up valuable points in the race for spots at Russia or better draws for the next qualifying competition.

Group A

There is no doubt about which match gets top billing in this group. It is the one between the former winners France and the former runners up in the Netherlands. Bulgaria take on Sweden in another appealing match while the two minnows meet when Luxembourg play host to Belarus.

Group B

There could be three largely one-sided matches in this group on Thursday night as the Euro 2016 winners Portugal play host to the Faroe Islands while Switzerland welcome Andorra in what should be close to massacres. Hungary host Latvia in the other game which might be closer but maybe not by an awful lot.

Group H

The other group we get to see on Thursday is Group H which means we could well get another heavy one-sided scoreline when Belgium take on Gibraltar. The most intriguing match of the night may well be the one between Greece and Estonia with the other game in this group seeing Bosnia-Herzegovina heading to Cyprus.

Betting

I’m not going to go too mad on this opening night. I am sticking with two bets and I am going to be boring and predictable as they are on the two big sides in action to cover what look like large handicaps but may not be high enough.

Portugal have to cover a 3.75 goal handicap at home to the Faroes but they have already beaten them 6-0 on the road in this campaign. Portugal need to keep on winning to try and overhaul Switzerland and I’m expecting them to go all out and lay a marker down here. Cristiano Ronaldo, Andre Silva and Bernardo Silva and co should be able to win this by four and probably a few more.

Belgium have to cover a much bigger handicap against Gibraltar. Their cap is 6.5 but having won 6-0 away from home and thrashed Estonia 8-1 at home earlier in this competition I don’t think it is a handicap that Belgium can’t cover. Gibraltar have lost 5-0 in Bosnia-Herzegovina and 4-0 in Estonia in this group already and they are in line for another thrashing here.
