The quarter finals of the World Matchplay begin inside the Winter Gardens in Blackpool on Thursday night when the top half of the draw is played out and it promises to be a wonderful night of darts with four of the best in the world in action.
Wednesday Recap
It was an up and down night for us on Wednesday as Brendan Dolan got into a couple of positions to see off Mervyn King but couldn’t get the job done and Terry Jenkins failed to land the shot in the dark bet against Anderson but the flip side to that was that Phil Taylor did cover the handicap and that is one good thing. In the other match Steve Beaton continued his excellent run to dump Michael Smith out.
Peter Wright vs Adrian Lewis
The quarter finals begin with a cracker between Wright and Lewis and if both play to their potential this should be an excellent match. One thing is for sure Lewis is going to have to play a lot better than he did against Gerwyn Price in the previous round because he was pap in that but the bright side is that he won and can get better.
Peter Wright has been going nicely in this tournament having dumped out dangerous opponents in Joe Cullen and Ian White and done it with plenty to spare with consistent scoring and solid finishing and a repeat of that will give him every chance of coming through here even though his head to head record against Lewis isn’t what he would like it to be.
I think based on what we’ve seen this week Wright will come through this but I’m already on him to win the match having backed him to win the quarter before a dart was thrown this week so I’m not going to bet on the match but those who didn’t follow me in on that could do worse than take the colourful Scot at even money.
Michael van Gerwen vs Dave Chisnall
The starter isn’t bad but the main event promises to be something quite special particularly if these two catch fire like only they can when they meet. Usually when they meet we are treated to a barrage of high scoring and heavy finishing.
It has to be said that van Gerwen often gets the better of things when the two do come together and they have played a lot recently having drawn each other in a number of the World Series events but Chisnall was always pretty close in those matches which will give him confidence here especially given how he’s come through the draw so far.
You can never truly go against van Gerwen but based on the week so far he might well give Chisnall chances in this match so it will be interesting to see if he is good enough to take them. If he is we could have a very special match on our hands.
I’m not going to predict the winner, or at least part with any cash on it but I do like 180s when these two meet and over what I’m expecting to be 27 or more legs in this best of 31 leg contest I’m not sure 20 180s is beyond them. When these two play they generally average a 180 a leg between them so with plenty of margin for a couple of legs without 180s I’m expecting to see 20 between them here.
