It is the final day of the European Championship on Sunday with the quarter finals, semi-finals and the final of the lucrative event all played out on what is a marathon conclusion to the tournament.
The standard so far in the event has been spectacular and that is set to continue with the eight men we have left battling it out for the big prize. Time restrictions will deny us the chance of betting on the semi-finals and final but we can get stuck into the quarter finals which we’ll do here.
James Wilson vs James Wade
A battle of the James’ gets us underway with James Wilson in his first major PDC quarter final taking on James Wade who firmly has his eyes on another title. Wilson has been playing very well for a while now and the fact it is his first big PDC quarter final shouldn’t worry us because he played plenty of big matches in the BDO.
Wilson is up against proven quality in the form of James Wade here though and while the match should be a competitive one to get us underway all of the odds for the various markets look about right to me so I’ll sit the opener out.
Michael van Gerwen vs Jelle Klaasen
The two best players in the tournament so far meet in the second match of the afternoon in an all-Dutch battle. It might not be bonfire night until Saturday but I’m expecting plenty of fireworks in this one and whenever these two meet we always get great matches.
It would take a brave man to suggest that van Gerwen would lose this match but it is a distinct possibility but I think the best bet in this match is in the 180 line. These two met at this stage of this tournament three years ago and they delivered 12 180s in that match. Both are significantly better now and playing near their top form so I’m expecting at least that many if not a few more.
Both men hit nine 180s apiece in their second round matches and that allows us a great opportunity to back more than 10.5 of them in this quarter final clash.
Mensur Suljovic vs Phil Taylor
The second seed Mensur Suljovic takes on Phil Taylor in a match which could potentially do wonders for the career of the Austrian. If he can defeat Taylor then that takes him to a whole new level but that won’t be easy.
There is no doubt that Suljovic is playing well right now but playing well against lesser players and playing well against Taylor are different things as we’ve seen whenever these two have met so far in their careers where in their four meetings to date Suljovic hasn’t really ever got close. I’ve a feeling he might get a little closer this time but it is only a gut feeling and not a strong enough one to act on betting wise.
Kyle Anderson vs Peter Wright
The session should conclude with an entertaining match between Peter Wright and the Australian rising star Kyle Anderson. I say should because this is the furthest Anderson has gone in a PDC major and the last time he was in a major quarter final back at the UK Open it went all wrong for him.
If he can settle any early nerves he has and this becomes a normal match I would expect the 180s to flow and Anderson to really push the Scot but that previous quarter final is in the back of my mind and off the back of a good weekend so far I’ve no need to guess that Anderson turns up so I’ll leave this one alone as Wright isn’t a certainty if the real Anderson does show up.
