The second set of four groups get their Grand Slam of Darts campaign underway in the evening session on Saturday and this is the session when the really big names come out to play at the Wolverhampton Civic Hall.
The PDC world champion Gary Anderson, both world number ones Michael van Gerwen and Glen Durrant, Phil Taylor and Martin Adams are all toeing the oche in this session so there are world champions everywhere you look.
Group A
It is in Group A where the evening gets underway. The two lesser names in the group, with no disrespect intended, go at it as Brendan Dolan takes on Max Hopp and then in the penultimate match of the night Michael van Gerwen faces the three time world champion Martin Adams in one of the standout matches.
Group D
This should be a competitive group behind Phil Taylor and it begins with Ian White taking on Darren Webster in the third match of the evening and then two matches later the aforementioned Taylor takes on the BDO star in the section in Darryl Fitton.
Group E
This group should be a corker and it begins in the second match of the evening when Alan Norris takes on Nathan Derry in a match both men need to win if at all possible. The third last game of the night sees Gary Anderson taking on Glen Durrant in the match which steals the show on the opening night.
Group H
This is the last group to get underway. In the fourth match of the evening Benito van de Pas goes up against Chris Dobey while the final match of the opening day sees Adrian Lewis looking to get off to a good start when he takes on the 2015 Lakeside champion Scott Mitchell.
Betting
As with the afternoon I’ve already got my fingers in a couple of pies so I’m largely taking a watching brief on this session too but there is one bet which I’ll take which looks a little overpriced to me.
The bet comes in the opening match where on both experience and their best game Brendan Dolan should be a heavier favourite against Max Hopp than he is. Dolan hasn’t had the results he would have liked on TV in recent times but there have been signs both in last week’s World Series and in the World Grand Prix before it that his form is improving again.
Max Hopp has been on our screens for the last two weeks but a theme of both weekends have been the amount of doubles that he missed and in a best of nine leg match you can’t do that and get away with it at this level. I keep saying Dolan is nothing special but he’s solid and he’s monotonous and that is enough to punish Hopp’s misses here.
