The evening session in the Grand Slam of Darts on Sunday will see the same players who competed on Saturday night back in action as the final four groups play their second games. At the end of the evening we will have a feel for who will progress and who has work to do to make it through.
Just like on Saturday evening where the standard was of an exceptional level the real star names are out to play and with the tournament ramping up a notch the quality should do too. As in the afternoon session the losers from Saturday face each other, as do the winners.
Group A
This is the final group to play a match on the evening but the first one sees the losers from Saturday up against each other as Max Hopp takes on the legend Martin Adams. The penultimate match of the night will see Michael van Gerwen taking on Brendan Dolan.
Group D
The evening begins in Group D with the battle between Darryl Fitton and Darren Webster. Both lost significantly in their opening match so whoever loses here will be gone from the tournament. The fifth match of the night is the all-Stoke clash between Phil Taylor and Ian White with the winner going through.
Group E
We saw some wonderful darts in this group on the opening night and I’m sure we’ll get lots more in this session. It begins in this group in the third match as Alan Norris faces Glen Durrant in a battle of two men who will have met often on the BDO circuit. Later in the evening Gary Anderson takes on Nathan Derry.
Group H
Adrian Lewis will be looking to bounce back from a heavy opening night defeat in the second game of this session. He takes on Chris Dobey who did well to come back from 4-0 down in his first match but will have been disappointing to lose the deciding leg. The evening is rounded off by Benito van de Pas facing Scott Mitchell.
Betting
I’m going with two bets in this session and they come in the first and last matches on the evening. In the opening match I can’t be having Darryl Fitton. I respect him as a player and at his very best he can mix it in any company but even at his best he is prone to missing doubles. When he isn’t at his best his back up game is quite weak.
Darren Webster isn’t flashy but he’s solid enough and if he can sort out the doubling issues he had on the opening night he should have every chance here. I don’t see Webster getting outscored that badly so it comes down to the doubling. I’ll take Webster at odds against with that in mind.
The odds in the final match are all wrong in my eyes. Benito van de Pas is a cracking young talent but he is fragile on the big stage and we saw that on Saturday night when he went 4-0 up and then went missing for four legs and you can’t keep getting away with that at this level. I’ve mentioned before that he can be prone to miss doubles too.
Scott Mitchell is a serious darts player. His win over Adrian Lewis was flawless and I’m guessing from the odds the bookmakers don’t expect him to back that up but you don’t win at Lakeside if you can’t back up good performances and I expect Mitchell to do that here. I think his scoring consistency is better and his relaxed approach should serve him well. He’s my bet of the night.
