There is just the one match in the Premier League on Sunday but it is quite an important one for the two sides involved when Southampton entertain Tottenham Hotspur at St Mary’s Stadium.
Southampton go into the contest desperate for points having slipped into the bottom three in the table while Tottenham need to keep on winning to keep up the heat in the chase for the top four at the end of the season.
Southampton
It will be an interesting few weeks for Southampton for both their hopes in this campaign and indeed long-term. They need significant reinforcement to their squad but you get the feeling they are only a couple more bad results away from a change in manager which would make that forward thinking more difficult.
The big issue they have is that they have won just one of their last 14 matches and in truth they visibly look to be getting worse. What they could do without is when they do put in a good performance such as last week that they do not get mugged off by a horrendous refereeing error. They need a really encouraging performance for their own belief as much as anything.
Tottenham
Tottenham will go level on points with fourth placed Liverpool should they win this match and not for the first time under Mauricio Pochettino they have hit some good form at the turn of the year. They have won four of their last five and completely dominated the match that they didn’t win in that run so they should be full of confidence here.
Spurs have found form in front of goal in recent times too. They have scored 15 goals in their last five matches and if they can keep that run up you would think they will really challenge for the top four especially with key players coming back in defensive areas over the next few weeks. Tottenham beat Southampton 5-2 in the reverse meeting which was an emphatic beating.
Team News
Southampton are hoping that Maya Yoshida will be fit to take part in this match but they will definitely be without Charlie Austin so Shane Long is set to lead the line once again.
Tottenham have a doubt over goalkeeper Hugo Lloris as he has been ill in the lead up to the match. Toby Alderweireld is back in training but the match could come too soon for him. Danny Rose and Harry Winks are still out.

Betting
I like Tottenham here. Southampton are shipping far too many goals at the minute and they do not look to have enough in them to keep Spurs at bay here. Tottenham will be full of confidence with the form that they are in too which won’t help the Saints.
Tottenham beat Southampton 5-2 just last month and while I don’t expect them to win by such an emphatic margin here I do expect them to control possession and find the net enough times to see them to a comfortable victory.
