2019-20 Sky Bet Championship – Saturday 31st August Matches Tips and Betting Preview

The last day of Sky Bet Championship action before the international break takes place on Saturday afternoon as the division begins to take shape before pausing for a couple of weeks. It has been a hectic start for all the clubs so some surprise results wouldn’t be a huge shock.

We have a televised match to kick things off on Saturday afternoon while the other matches can all be viewed overseas and there are ways and means in the UK if you need to. It looks a decent enough card to follow too.

Saturday’s fixtures are as follows: (3pm unless stated)

Bristol City v Middlesbrough (12.30)

Birmingham City v Stoke City

Brentford v Derby County

Leeds United v Swansea City

Luton Town v Huddersfield Town

Millwall v Hull City

Nottingham Forest v Preston North End

Reading v Charlton Athletic

Sheffield Wednesday v Queens Park Rangers

West Bromwich Albion v Blackburn Rovers

Wigan Athletic v Barnsley

Big Matches

The televised action comes from Ashton Gate where Bristol City will look to continue the woes of Middlesbrough whose start to the season has not been the desired one. The other big game on the card sees the top two sides putting their unbeaten starts to the campaign on the line when Leeds United take on Swansea City in what could be a hugely entertaining encounter given the way they have both played so far. At the other end of the table two sides who have struggled to date meet when Wigan Athletic host Barnsley.

Best of the Rest

There were two divisions between Luton Town and Huddersfield Town last season but they will be on the same pitch at Kenilworth Road on Saturday. Two teams who have made much better starts than expected are Reading and Charlton Athletic and they do battle at the Madejski while Preston North End will look to stay in the top six for the international break when they go to Nottingham Forest. Sheffield Wednesday host QPR and West Brom welcome Blackburn Rovers to The Hawthorns in two of the other matches.

Betting

I like two bets on Saturday afternoon with the first of them being on my own team Luton Town who I think will have too much for Huddersfield Town. I’ve watched a couple of Huddersfield matches and they’ve done little to impress me in either with a lack of a goal threat and even less creativity two clear issues that they have. They are defensively tighter but Fulham exploited them with pace and trickery and Luton have that in their arsenal. It took the Hatters a while to adjust to life in the second tier but they were competitive while finding their feet. The signs over the last couple of weeks have been that they have got up to speed with the division and it wouldn’t be a surprise if they flourish over the next month or two with a softening of the fixtures. Luton will be keen to get their first home win quickly and I fancy it will come here against a Huddersfield side who could be forgiven for forgetting what winning feels like.

The other bet I like is for more than 2.5 goals when Reading meet Charlton Athletic. Charlton have taken the game to their opponents so far this season and even when they have been on the back foot they have still found a way to be dangerous with their lively strike force. Reading have ploughed money into their attacking unit so I’m expecting this one to be a fairly open match in a contest that both sides will feel they can win. That often leads to plenty of goal action and so the 10/11 on over 2.5 goals is attractive enough here.
