It is back to Group C for Friday’s action in the Africa Cup of Nations which means that the defending champions Ivory Coast are back in the spotlight and looking to put right an indifferent result and performance from their first match.
The opening games in this group were tight and tense and lacking in quality but hopefully this second set of matches is different.
Ivory Coast vs DR Congo
After being held by Togo in their first match the Ivory Coast really need to get a victory on the board here. DR Congo edged out Morocco in their opening match and a win here will see them through with a match to spare which will offer them a huge incentive.
You would think the Ivory Coast would struggle to be as bad in this match as they were in their first one but questions will be asked of them because they had some pretty powerful players on the bench in that opener. I’m far from convinced they’ll beat a DR Congo who are hard to break down but I’m effectively on the DR Congo win as I’ve backed them to qualify and that will do me for interest in this one.
Morocco vs Togo
Togo will be looking to build on their solid point they earned against the Ivory Coast while Morocco have to get something from this match else they will be as good as out of the competition so that sets this up nicely at least.
I went into the tournament with concerns about Morocco and they did nothing to ease those concerns in their opening match. Togo rarely looked in any danger against the Ivory Coast and if they can deliver another solid performance and stick a goal on top they have every chance of getting a positive result from this match.
I like Togo on the handicap here. They don’t ship too many and this Morocco side look to be lacking a potent threat up top and some creativity around it. Togo offered pace and trickery against the Ivory Coast and with their confidence and belief up I expect them to avoid defeat here.
