2017 ATP World Tour Finals – Day 1 Betting Preview

The ATP World Tour Finals get underway at the o2 Arena in London on Sunday with group matches in both the singles event and the doubles tournament kicking the action off. We have four matches to enjoy at the end of season event on Sunday with Roger Federer very much the highlight of the card.

He will look to get his tournament off to a flying start but the quality should be high right throughout the day with a couple of tasty doubles matches supplementing the singles action.

Afternoon Session

John Peers & Henri Kontinen vs Ryan Harrison & Michael Venus

The action starts off with the defending doubles champions beginning their title defence when John Peers and Henri Kontinen takes on the French Open champions Ryan Harrison and Michael Venus in the first match of the tournament.

The Aussie-Finn pairing have been one of the best teams in the doubles game all year and arrive in London with a decent chance of winning the title again but we saw in May and June that the American-Kiwi pair can get inspired and come through any draw. You have to respect the French Open champions but I fancy their opponents here although they are too short to merit a bet.

Roger Federer vs Jack Sock

The opening singles match of the tournament sees the world number two Roger Federer beginning his quest for another o2 title when he takes on the Paris Masters champion Jack Sock who must be feeling amazing that he qualified for this event.

These two have met three times in the past with Federer winning all three matches and you would think he will win this again. Sock has only forced one of their six sets beyond 10 games and once Federer gets a read on his serve you would think the game will be up for the American. I don’t see anything other than a 2-0 Federer win here but at 1/3 I’m happy to leave that.

Evening Session

Jean-Julien Rojer & Horia Tecau vs Pierre-Hugues Herbert & Nicolas Mahut

The first match in the evening session is a very interesting doubles match between the US Open champions Jean-Julien Rojer and Horia Tecau taking on the French former world number one pairing of Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut.

These two pairings are very well established in the game with the Dutch-Romanian pairing winners here in 2015 and Grand Slam winners this year while the French pair are former world number ones who have been together for a while.

It hasn’t been the 2017 the French pair would have liked though. They have won some minor events but they have been nothing like the side we’ve seen them be in the pair and they’ve generally struggled here. They have been here twice, won only one match in six and never escaped their group. Rojer and Tecau love it here and can begin with a win.

Alexander Zverev vs Marin Cilic

Arguably the pick of the matches from a competitive view on the opening day of the tournament sees the former US Open champion Marin Cilic taking on the tournament debutant Alexander Zverev who will be looking to crown a breakthrough season in style.

These two have met four times in the past with the German winning three of those meetings but they have all been close and given that you would expect Roger Federer to dominate this group making this match even bigger, I expect this to be tight too.

Both men have serves which they can protect and both are decent enough returning the serve so I’m expecting two close sets if not three and I would be surprised if this one is over before the total games number is pushed way beyond 23.5.
