The second round of the singles action begins at the Australian Open in Melbourne Park on Wednesday while we also see the start of the doubles too on another busy day of tennis in the Australian city.
Some big names came through on Tuesday with more back in action on Wednesday and after one of the worst bad beats I can remember on Tuesday I’ll be hoping for more luck as we go along here.
Rod Laver Arena
The first second round match on this court sees Venus Williams looking for a place in the last 32. She takes on Stefanie Voegele of Switzerland before the defending champion Angelique Kerber is back in action in an all-German clash with Carina Witthoeft. The day session is rounded off by Roger Federer taking on Noah Rubin.
The night session begins with the French Open champion Garbine Muguruza taking on Samantha Crawford while Andy Murray rounds off the day when he takes on Andrey Rublev.
Margaret Court Arena
Elina Svitolina gets the action underway on this court. The eleventh seed takes on Julia Boserup before Svetlana Kuznetsova takes on Jaimee Fourlis. Stan Wawrinka goes up against Steve Johnson to conclude the day session.
The evening session sees Simona Halep’s conqueror Shelby Rogers facing Ashleigh Marty before Bernard Tomic plays Victor Estrella Burgos for a place in the third round.
Hisense Arena
Kei Nishikori is first up on Hisense when he faces the talented French player Jeremy Chardy. Jelena Jankovic meets Julia Goerges when they have finished before Shuai Peng goes up against Eugenie Bouchard. The last game on this court sees Andreas Seppi and Nick Kyrgios taking each other on.
Best of the Rest
Mixed in around the doubles action are plenty more singles matches. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga against Dusan Lajovic is one of the highlights on the outside courts as is the clash between Tomas Berdych and Ryan Harrison. Carla Suarez Navarro, Marin Cilic, Monica Puig, John Isner and Shuai Zhang are also in action.
Betting
I’m going with three on Wednesday. Two of them come in the men’s draw and there is one for the women as well. The first bet comes out on court 8 as John Isner takes on Mischa Zverev for the third time in their careers. The first two matches have both gone the way of Isner but both matches saw a tiebreak in the first set. Given the absence of a decent ground game from both I’ve got to think that is a trend which will continue in these fast conditions.
Later in the day the Olympic champion Monica Puig will take to court 7 to take on a Mona Barthel who has slumped in the world rankings and who wasn’t overly impressive in the first round. Barthel saw off the talented youngster Destanee Aiava but there were areas of that performance I expect Puig to expose with her power. Credit to Barthel for getting through the first round but Puig is a huge upgrade and I don’t think she’ll go any further.
In the night session Bernard Tomic is back on the court after looking good in the first round. He takes on Aljaz Bedene’s conqueror Victor Estrella Burgos from the Dominica Republic. Kudos to the Caribbean man for coming through that first round clash but he looked bang average to me for large periods and I don’t see him landing a blow on the Australian. I expect Tomic to win in straight sets and for the games line to get nowhere near 30.5.
