2017 Glorious Goodwood Meeting – Day 2 Betting Preview

Let’s hope that Day 2 at Goodwood is more punter friendly after winners at 100/1, 50/1 and 33/1 on the opening day.  The Sussex Stakes is the highlight and we take one bet in that as well as one in the 3 year old handicap earlier in the day.

2.25 1m4f Handicap

A decent contest with many of these open to improvement but we are siding with Mark Johnston who has landed 3 of the last 9 runnings of this.  The one that has gone under the radar a little is Londinium who has just 6 career starts, winning 2.  He twice beat Tommy Taylor as a 2 year old who is now a 100 rated horse, whereas our selection is racing off just 84.

He opened this season with a head 2nd at Ripon after being stepped up to this trip after running over half a mile shorter as a 2 year old.  He stayed on all the way to the line so it was somewhat surprising when he raced over a mile and a quarter at Chester last time out.  It’s easy to ignore his 3rd place as the race couldn’t have gone worse; took a keen hold, no pace, hampered and poorly positioned.   However, once out in the clear, he came home well and this step back up in trip is sure to suit.

He acts on all going but the forecast rain might just suit better than some of his rivals so 9/1 looks a very good each way bet.

Tips

WON – Back Londinium (e/w) for a 1/10 stake at 10.00 BetVictor BOG (¼ odds 1-3)

3.35 Sussex Stakes

According to the bookies, this is a straight shootout between Ribchester and Churchill.  It is hard to oppose the former with his excellent form, including an all the way Lockinge win before following up in the Queen Anne.   Churchill is a little less obvious having run poorly at Ascot when finishing only 4th in the St James Palace.

It is worth taking both of these on in this 9 runner race with the French raider, Zelzal.  Now a 4 year old, he has an exceptional turn of foot and interestingly, has Dettori on top.   That suggests to me the trainer wants a top jockey with course knowledge on board and who better than Frankie to do the steering.

He won 4 of his first 5 starts including the Group 1 Prix Jean Prat but has been turned over the last twice when starting favourite.  He was positioned too far back on both occasions, racing off nothing more than a mediocre pace, so the faster pace here coupled with a more experienced jockey could be the key.   He won’t mind the ground however it comes up and he comes here fresher than most having been since just once this season.   He has the look of a horse that has been laid out and 11/1 looks great value.

Tips

Back Zelzal (e/w) for a 1/10 stake at 12.00 Paddy Power BOG (⅕ odds 1-3)
