We have reached the first of two big days in the Paul Lawrie Matchplay on Saturday when the last 16 and the quarter finals of the tournament will be played. At the end of the day we will know the four men left to battle it out for the title on Sunday.
Friday Recap
It was another day of good golf mixed with surprise results as is often the way in this format of the game. We saw exits for the likes of Mikko Ilonen, Matthew Southgate and Victor Dubuisson as the established names struggled again.
We didn’t struggle with our bets for the day with both Ashley Chesters and Thomas Detry coming through unscathed but sadly we won’t be picking up anything with our longer-term bets as both our remaining outrights lost on Friday despite both leading comfortably at one point.

Saturday Betting
We have just eight matches in the first session of the day to get stuck into but as ever this week all eight have been priced up. After looking through the schedule and the form guides there are a couple of bets that I like. These will be the only bets for Saturday though as time restrictions will deny us the opportunity of previewing the quarter finals.
Ashun Wu vs Chris Paisley
Match tees off at 07.20 BST
One match I like in the last 16 is the one between Ashun Wu and Chris Paisley where I think the Chinese star is worth backing. This is becoming an important week for the player from China with it being Presidents Cup year and while he is nowhere near qualifying yet a decent month combined with a good matchplay credential could see him catch the eye.
He has certainly played some nice golf this week having seen off two competent players in Nicolas Colsaerts and Rikard Karlberg. Chris Paisley has done well to come through this far but he was nowhere near as impressive as Wu in the second round and really only got through because his opponent was so poor. I have to side with the form here and that means taking Wu at even money.
Tom Lewis vs Alexander Knappe
Match tees off at 07.50 BST
Tom Lewis headed to Germany needing a big week for his career prospects and he is well on the way to getting what he wanted. He has come through two solid opponents with the minimum of fuss so far in the tournament and now takes on the local player who might have flattered to deceive so far this week.
I say that because his win in the second round was as much down to Victor Dubuisson having one of his awfully detrimental days as it was his own great play. I don’t see Lewis shooting himself in the foot like the Frenchman did so Knappe is going to have to go out and win this match. That is possible of course but there is no doubt in my mind that Lewis has played the better golf this week and is worthy of a bet at even money.
