2017 PDC World Darts Championship – Tournament Specials Betting Preview

The PDC World Darts Championship is the biggest tournament in the sport and the bookmakers appreciate that enough to have priced up a series of specials markets for the competition. With them having taken the time to do that it would be rude of us not to indulge in one of two so here is our look at the best of them.

There are markets available on things like 180s, nine dart finishes, stage of elimination and various checkouts. We’ve found three markets we like the look of.

Total 180s

A couple of bookmakers have priced up the total number of 180s in the tournament and the lowest line out there is 655.5. There was a record 654 maximums hit last year but I’m expecting that record to be comfortably slaughtered this year. I think we’re going to be on for nearer 700 180s in total.

There are a couple of reasons for that. First of all the preliminary matches have been shifted up to the best of three sets from the best of seven legs and the quality in those matches is a lot higher. The second reason is aside from the eight preliminary round winners the rest of the qualifiers are all tour regulars. In the past spaces were given to Australian, American and African players in the main draw but that isn’t the case anymore.

Bearing that in mind and the fact the standard has gone through the roof in 2016 I’m expecting this line to be covered. We have 71 matches in the tournament which means we need an average of just over nine per game. Given the last seven matches are the best of nine sets and beyond I’m confident we’ll get that and plenty more.

Most 180s

This is a market I like betting in because in theory you don’t need a player to make the final to get the winner here. Of course the common logic is that the more matches a player plays the more 180s he will hit. That is all well and good but if that player plays three or four easier matches where he can cruise through he may not hit as many 180s in them as someone involved in a tight battle in the same round.

I think the way to play the market is to attack the quarter which looks like it is the most open as those are the ones that tend to deliver the tightest matches and for me that is the bottom quarter. If we can find the man who comes out of this quarter the worst he will do is play one game less than the winner.

I’ve already backed Michael Smith to win the quarter so it makes sense to back him in this market too especially with him being such a prolific 180 hitter. He’s unlikely to come past Ricky Evans and Mervyn King or Steve West without a battle so he should get lots of time to fill the 60 up.

I’m also going to take Peter Wright in this market. He is hitting as many 180s as anyone right now and I think he’ll win the top part of this quarter although he’ll be made to battle a little bit by the likes of Jamie Lewis and Ian White so he should have the ability to rack up the 180s. If one of those two make it through the quarter we’ll have a huge value runner.

Tournament Winning Double

The last market I like is the tournament winning double. Double 20 is the 3/1 favourite with double 16 a point bigger and that will surprise nobody because those are the two main doubles of choice but Gary Anderson has won the title on double 12 for the last two years and I think there could be value in that at 14/1.

Double 12 is getting left a lot more in the game now with players leaving 81 and 84 after nine darts much more regularly than they used to and then it is a simple one treble to get to the double 12. There are many other combinations that end on D12 such as 75, 63, 78 and some players even go that way for 72 as well.

When you factor in the three figure finishes like 141, 144 and 138 that end up there too there is enough scope for thinking the D12 could be the one converted to provide the ultimate glory for someone.
