2017 Scottish Open Golf – Side Markets Betting Preview

The Scottish Open begins on Thursday but before it does there is a chance for us to assess and attack the many side markets that are on show for the tournament. As ever the majority of nationalities have their own separate market and there are the various finishing position markets too.

There is plenty of value to be had in some of these markets so we’ll attempt to find the best of it here. There are three markets we are going to attack.

Top Scot

There are a dozen Scottish professionals plus one amateur teeing it up in their national open which forms a decent little market. Martin Laird has travelled over for the event and he is favourite in the betting while last week’s fast finisher Richie Ramsay is the second favourite.

Both of those would look to have a genuine chance but I don’t really want to be on anyone at a short price with the many factors in play at a links event. Russell Knox, David Drysdale, Stephen Gallacher and Paul Lawrie are some of the others in with a chance in an event like this but I like one other.

Marc Warren may not be coming into this tournament in the best of form after half a dozen missed cuts in a row but when it comes to links golf it is a different story. He has a bunch of top five finishes in links events in the last 2-3 years and is clearly at his most comfortable in this environment. This is a big week not just as it is his home event but time is running out to get the respective points needed for the future so we can expect Warren to be focused here. At 14/1 he offers value in this market.

Top Irishman

Five Irish players tee it up in this tournament with Rory McIlroy the biggest name of them and as such a very warm favourite but he appears in no form at all and it could be that he is well worth taking on this week.

Graeme McDowell, Paul Dunne, Padraig Harrington and Darren Clarke are the other men from Ireland who are here this week and I think Dunne could be the one to oppose McIlroy with.

He famously led The Open heading into the final round as an amateur two years ago and he played a couple of nice rounds last week to follow up his second placed finish in Morocco which solidified his comfort in the wind. In two spins at the Dunhill Links he has scores of 64 and 66 at Kingsbarns so on a similar track I expect him to go well.

Top 20 Finish

I have a feeling this course could really suit Anirban Lahiri and I would not be at all surprised to see him finish high up on the leaderboard here. Lahiri doesn’t play much in Europe these days. He has only played three European Tour events in 2017 but he finished in the top 20 in all of them and I fancy him to make it four in a row here.

Lahiri has a brilliant short game and is usually pinpoint with his irons and that is ideal for around here. I think he has everything it takes to push the top of the board very close this weekend.
