The first week of the US Open concludes with a decent looking schedule at Flushing Meadows on Sunday. With the singles competitions now down to the last 16 stage there are fewer matches on show but each one will get extra attention in their own right.
Day 6 Recap
It was a lengthy Saturday at Flushing Meadows with the day session on Ashe not concluding until well past 8.30pm local time and it was a very entertaining one too. Karolina Pliskova and Rafael Nadal were both made to work hard before coming through while elsewhere there were easier wins for Roger Federer, Elina Svitolina and Juan Martin del Potro among others.
We had a winner and a couple of losers on Saturday with Andrey Rublev providing the winner while Roberto Bautista Agut had no answer to Juan Martin del Potro. Agnieszka Radwanska lost an epic to Coco Vandeweghe in a match which could have gone either way.
Arthur Ashe Stadium
The action gets underway on Sunday with the latest star to rise in the men’s game Denis Shapovalov taking on the hugely underrated but extremely consistent Pablo Carreno Busta. They are followed by Anastasija Sevastova and Maria Sharapova before Venus Williams takes on Carla Suarez Navarro to round off the day session.
The night session begins with what could be the match of the tournament as Petra Kvitova takes on the Wimbledon champion and tournament favourite Garbine Muguruza for a place in the quarter final. Sam Querrey and Mischa Zverev end the action.
Louis Armstrong Stadium
A men’s doubles match starts off play on the second court on Sunday before a match which was unable to finish due to the rain on Saturday draws to a conclusion. The two singles matches then take place as Julia Goerges facing Sloane Stephens and Paolo Lorenzi meets Kevin Anderson.
Grandstand
There are plenty of doubles matches on the popular Grandstand court on Sunday but submerged in among them is one men’s singles match and it could be a lengthy one as Lucas Pouille takes on Diego Schwartzman for the right to face either Shapovalov or Carreno Busta in the quarter final.

Men’s Betting
I’m going to take on three of the matches in the draw on Sunday. I like Denis Shapovalov first up against Pablo Carreno Busta. I rate the Spaniard but he has a couple of things against him here. Firstly although he is 5-2 this year against left handers he has a losing record to them overall in his career and two of the wins this year were against dominant servers on clay so that record could be padded. Secondly this is his first match on Ashe this year whereas Shapovalov will be playing here for a third time.
The other reason I like the Canadian here is the variety in his game. He isn’t just someone who hides behind his serve. He has a glorious backhand and the exciting game that gets him into the net. I think he’ll be inspired here and he is my first bet.
The match between Lucas Pouille and Diego Schwartzman has a long game written all over it. Both men are excellent against the serve so I don’t see the initial hit dominating. I think we will get breaks throughout the contest and this just has the look of one of those Pouille five setters which is rapidly becoming a trademark. I like over 38.5 games in this one.
In the night session I think Mischa Zverev is great value. His performance against John Isner was one of the best I’ve seen this week and it was perfect preparation for taking on Sam Querrey. Querrey has more about his game than Isner but primarily he will look to dominate from his serve in much the same way. Zverev was returning brilliantly against Isner and if he can repeat that then he is tremendous value to complete a quick fire American night session double.
Women’s Betting
I’m going with just the one bet in the women’s draw on Sunday and that is in the big match in the night session. Petra Kvitova was awesome against Caroline Garcia in the previous round but she was helped by the French woman not turning up for the first 45 minutes of that match.
Garbine Muguruza won’t be making that mistake and she is in awesome form. She won Wimbledon in July losing just one set in total and then won Cincinnati dropping just six games in the semi-final and final against Karolina Pliskova and Simona Halep respectively and she has only dropped nine games in her three matches here.
On a day where I think we could see plenty of third sets in the women’s draw I don’t expect one here. I think Muguruza will get the job done with a good deal in hand and cover a 3.5 game handicap.
