The second round of Wimbledon is due to conclude on another relatively busy day of action at SW19 on Thursday and by the end of the day we should know the last 32 line up in both singles draws.
Some big names made it through on Wednesday but we have another stellar cast list on Thursday so we should be in for yet more excellent tennis over the course of the day.
Day 3 Recap
We lost one big name on Wednesday when Petra Kvitova fell by the wayside but the other big names all made it through. Andy Murray, Rafael Nadal, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Simona Halep, Venus Williams and Jo Konta all made it through although the latter was forced to battle like crazy.
Unfortunately for us while it was a good day for the big names it was not good for our bets with none of them landing despite Camila Giorgi serving to bring one of them in. The others never got going so there is work to do going forward.
Centre Court
It was a day of Brits on Centre Court on Wednesday and there is another on show to open things up on Thursday as Kyle Edmund takes on Gael Monfils. Karolina Pliskova is next on centre when she faces Magdalena Rybarikova before Roger Federer is back on the court he has had so much success. He takes on Dusan Lajovic.
Court 1
Novak Djokovic heads the action on this court. He is first on against the unknown Adam Lavlasek before a match between two clay court specialists as Dominic Thiem faces Gilles Simon. Angelique Kerber goes up against Kirsten Flipkens to round off the action on this court.
Court 2
Grigor Dimitrov is first up on this court when he faces the former Australian Open finalist Marcos Baghdatis. Agnieszka Radwanska is second onto the court. She plays the American player Christina McHale before Milos Raonic meets Mikhail Youzhny with the final match on this court seeing Tsvetana Pironkova facing Caroline Wozniacki.
Court 3
The tie of the round gets us going on this court when Ekaterina Makarova faces Svetlana Kuznetsova before Juan Martin del Potro plays Ernests Gulbis. Garbine Muguruza is third on court against Yanina Wickmayer and then comes the clash of the next gen stars when Frances Tiafoe plays Alexander Zverev.
Best of the Rest
As ever in the first week there are some huge names on show on the outside courts when Tomas Berdych, Lucie Safarova, John Isner, Kiki Mladenovic, Jack Sock and Coco Vandeweghe all face unseeded opposition around the grounds.

Men’s Betting
I like two in the men’s draw on Thursday. Right off the bat we have Grigor Dimitrov taking on Marcos Baghdatis in a match I expect the Bulgarian to dominate. His all-round game should be too much for Baghdatis and I expect Dimitrov to come through in straight sets. He has to cover a 6.5 game handicap which I don’t think is too much. It is only one break per set and that is more than achievable.
Last week in Turkey Yuichi Sugita beat Adrian Mannarino in the final and they meet again on Thursday and I fancy the same result. That was the second title the Japanese player has won in this grass court season after he landed a Challenger event in Surbiton. Mannarino hasn’t been past this stage of a Slam since 2014 and he might not even have made it this far if Feliciano Lopez didn’t pull out injured. I’m with the Japanese player here.

Women’s Betting
I like three in the women’s draw. The first one comes in the match of the day where Ekaterina Makarova and Svetlana Kuznetsova meet in what I fully expect to be a titanic tussle. These two have excellent games on this surface and I’m not envisioning many breaks of serve. The games line in this one is at 21 and I’m expecting this to sail over.
I also expect the match between Tsvetana Pironkova and Caroline Wozniacki to fly past 20.5 games. Wozniacki rarely does it easy in Grand Slams and Pironkova can definitely play the game. She battled Simona Halep most of the way at Eastbourne and has a heavy game to counter the Dane’s defensive style. I fancy two tight sets or even three sets in this one which should guarantee a 21st game.
Angelique Kerber has done nothing to convince me she is at the top of her game at the minute and even though she came through the first round she had more unforced errors than winners. That wasn’t the case with Kirsten Flipkens who had significantly more winners than errors in her opening win over the dangerous Misaki Doi. These two met here in 2014 and it went three sets. This one could too but however it ends I think a 4.5 game start for the Belgian is a shade too much.
