The third day of action in the World Grand Prix at the Guild Hall in Preston on Wednesday sees the first round come to an end and the second round begin on what as ever is another very busy day.
Among those beginning their campaigns on Wednesday are the world champion Mark Selby, former world champion Neil Robertson and class acts Mark Allen and Ding Junhui.
Afternoon Session
The main table action begins with the juicy looking clash between Neil Robertson and Ricky Walden before the world champion takes centre stage in the second game. Mark Selby takes on a Martin Gould for whom this event could be a bonus having only qualified for it as late as Friday evening.
The outside table doesn’t lack for quality either. German Masters winner Anthony Hamilton is back in action when he faces Mark Allen before the afternoon concludes on this table with an all-Chinese battle as Yu Delu goes up against Ding Junhui.
Evening Session
The line up for the evening session isn’t completely known at the time of writing. The second round kicks off in this session with the first match on the main table seeing the winner of the Ding Junhui vs Yu Delu match taking on Shaun Murphy and that will be followed by the battle of the tournament winners Anthony McGill and Marco Fu.
The outside table will be occupied to the full as ever too. First up in this session on there Ali Carter takes on the Northern Ireland winner Mark King before the all-Welsh battle wrap up play when Michael White goes up against Ryan Day.
Betting
I’m going to take two bets on the card on Wednesday. The first is in the afternoon where Martin Gould has a chance against Mark Selby. To be fair to Gould he has an excellent record against Selby with five wins from their nine meetings and the way the two played in Germany last week was chalk and cheese. Selby didn’t look great whereas Gould looked back to his best and I think Gould can take this to a decider if not win the match.
Later in the evening I like Michael White against Ryan Day. He is another who has a good record in their matches and it was really impressive how White dealt with John Higgins in the first round. His safety was really good and he scored heavily. Ryan Day beat Bingham in the first round but neither played well and Day will have to up his game remarkably to get the job done here. I wouldn’t say he can’t but at odds against I’ll side with the player we know is playing well in White.
