One of the biggest titles in the sport of snooker will be decided on Sunday when Ronnie O’Sullivan takes on Kyren Wilson for the Champion of Champions crown at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry in what should be a great way to end a wonderful week.
Both these men have come through against tough opposition to take their place in this final and now they are here they will both be targeting another title on the season and another excellent pay cheque for their efforts.
Ronnie O’Sullivan
We saw close to vintage Ronnie in his group on Tuesday but by his own admission we saw nothing like that in his semi-final on Friday night. He actually looked angry with what he produced against Shaun Murphy even though what he did offer up was more than good enough to come through. Ronnie is always a perfectionist but in finals it is generally about just getting the job done.
The Rocket won’t be short of motivation in this final. He has lost the final here in the last two years so he will be eager to come out on top and get his hands on the title once again. One thing which could assist him in his quest is the amazing scoring he has shown so far. He is up to eight centuries for the week which is pretty incredible in three matches even for him.
Kyren Wilson
It is so hard not to be impressed with Kyren Wilson these days. He is a seriously improved player and when you think he was bloody good anyway he’s now a really special talent who will threaten all three of the ‘Triple Crown’ titles this season. This week he has won from the front and he has won when under pressure and you know you’re back on it when that is the case.
It isn’t just O’Sullivan who has scored well this week. Wilson might not have the eye catching numbers that O’Sullivan does but he’s bagged three centuries and a host of other big breaks and his long game looks in fantastic order. He’ll need to score well in this final and win frames in one visit but we’ve seen all week that he is more than capable of doing just that. This could be his coming of age day.
Head to Head
These two have met on three occasions in the past. Wilson won their first battle but it is O’Sullivan who has come out on top on their most recent two. This will be their second meeting in a final having played out the English Open final last season. O’Sullivan was truly awesome in that final. He also won in the Shanghai Masters semi-final this season so he has winning form against the Warriors. His 22-12 lead in the frames battle highlights that O’Sullivan’s wins generally come with plenty in hand.

Betting
I will have a bet on the final but it won’t come in the match betting because I’m effectively already on Wilson at 22/1 for this one having backed him before a shot was struck this week. He has already sealed the place money so I’m happy to let that ride as my interest in the match in the hope he can pull off the surprise.
Given how good the scoring has been this week though the bet has to be for over 3.5 centuries in the final. O’Sullivan is averaging a ton every other frame he’s won in the tournament and Wilson is averaging one a match as well and he could have had even more than that too. Both men are in fine form so over on the centuries line looks the way forward to me.
