2018 China Championship Snooker – Day 2 Betting Preview

The second day of action in the China Championship out in Guangzhou will see the first round of the tournament conclude. We saw some excellent snooker on the opening day of the competition and we should be set for plenty more on Tuesday.

There were surprises and expected results on the first day with most of the big names making it through and on Tuesday the likes of Mark Williams, Ding Junhui, Judd Trump and Mark Selby will look to book their spots in the second round as part of a packed schedule.

Morning Session

There are only two sessions of play on Tuesday with the headline acts in the first of them being Judd Trump and Mark Selby. Both men will occupy one of the TV tables each with Trump facing Rhys Clark and Selby going up against the potentially dangerous Akani Songsermsawad so both will need to be on their mettle.

Some big names are on the outside tables in this session with the Shanghai Masters finalist Barry Hawkins one of them and Ryan Day another. Hawkins takes on Ashley Carty while Day meets Mike Dunn. Yan Bingtao faces Chris Wakelin in the pick of the matches in the session while elsewhere Robert Milkins meets Chang Bingyu, Noppon Saengkham takes on Xu Si and Graeme Dott plays Stuart Carrington.

Afternoon Session

The home star Ding Junhui is back in action in the second session of the day and as ever he is on a TV table. He meets the Welsh player Daniel Wells for a place in the second round. On the other table Shaun Murphy is playing and his opponent is the perfectly competent Liam Highfield in what looks like a good match.

There are some huge names away from the cameras with the world champion Mark Williams away from the spotlight. He takes on former world champion Ken Doherty while Gary Wilson plays Luo Honghao and Zhao Xintong goes up against Anthony McGill. Liang Wenbo is a surprising player on the undercard. He meets John Astley while Marco Fu takes on Zhang Anda. The defending champion Luca Brecel continues his title defence when he goes up against Martin O’Donnell.

Betting

In the morning session I’m going to take on the boy wonder Yan Bingtao. Chris Wakelin has already shown some decent form this season and he is just the kind of player who should go well against Bingtao. He can keep things at long range and if the youngster leaves himself open taking on a low percentage shot, as he has a tendency to do, Wakelin is good enough to score well and take advantage of those openings. At his price he looks too big to beat a Bingtao who is very beatable all of a sudden.

In the later session I have to be on Anthony McGill. I thought he played some lovely snooker in his two Shanghai Masters matches and on another day he would have beaten Mark Williams in their second round clash. Zhao Xintong is very much in the Yan Bingtao mould. He’ll go for his shots and while he’ll get his fair share if he has an off day from distance when the solid all-round game of McGill will catch him out. McGill knows how to deal with these young pups and he should be a lot shorter than he is to deal with this one.
