At the halfway stage of the DP World Tour Championship, the final European Tour event of the season, we have an amazing leaderboard packed with star names who are set to do battle over the final 36 holes for one of the most prestigious titles in the game.
The third round of the tournament takes place on Saturday, which is traditionally known as moving day, and given the current state of the leaderboard and the quality that is on it we should be in for some morning of golf.
Round 2 Recap
Matt Wallace will take the halfway lead into the third round. He fired in a 65 to lead the field by one shot with 36 holes remaining as he goes in search of a fourth win on the year. He is on 11 under par with a trio of players on 10 under. They are Jordan Smith, Adrian Otaegui and Danny Willett with Masters champion Patrick Reed another shot back on nine under. Rory McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood are among the four players on eight under, three shots off the lead. Defending champion Jon Rahm is seven under.
Given that Wallace is the leader of the tournament it stands to reason that he won our bet on Friday. In fact he didn’t just beat Haotong Li he walloped him by eight shots to put us ahead of our match bets this week. Our pre-tournament outright pick Dean Burmester sits in a tie for sixth on eight under so we’re in good shape in this event.
Saturday Betting
There is a fledgling end of round leader market for Saturday’s round but unlike on Friday I’m a little more reluctant to get involved. That is because the big hitters have made their way to the top of the leaderboard, or in a position to strike if they haven’t quite got there and with another low scoring round anticipated there are a number of runners and riders who could come out with the lead on Saturday. There isn’t anyone who is a big enough price to tempt me in so I’ll leave this market alone on Saturday.

Saturday 2 Balls
As with Friday the field goes out in twos in leaderboard order so the final pairing out on Saturday is the English pair of Matt Wallace and Danny Willett. They go off at 08.40 GMT with Jordan Smith and Adrian Otaegui out alongside each other for the second successive day. They go off 10 minutes earlier. There are a number of decent pairings out on the golf course on Saturday as you would expect in an event like this and there is one which catches my eye from a betting point of view.
Henrik Stenson vs Jon Rahm
Match tees off at 07.50 GMT
The Ryder Cup pair of Henrik Stenson and Jon Rahm go out alongside each other just under an hour before the leaders head off with both men beginning their third round four shots on the lead on seven under par.
Stenson shot a wonderful round on Friday to get himself in contention in this tournament but I wonder how much of that was him free rolling and how much of it was him playing lights out. I thought heading into the tournament that the Swede might struggle in the second half of it given his lack of competitive action recently and I’m going to act on that here. We know Rahm can play this golf course. He is defending the title on it and it is made for him. He found something late in his second round which he will hope to take into this third round and at 10/11 against an opponent who could easily fade I think the Spaniard is the bet, especially when we factor in he is probably a good thing even if Stenson doesn’t falter.
