With players making their way back from China the opening day of the European Masters on Monday is a relatively quiet one in terms of matches on the schedule but there are some big names on show to get everything up and running.
Luca Brecel, Kyren Wilson, Stuart Bingham and the defending champion Judd Trump are among the star players on the card on Monday so while there may not be as many matches as normal the quality shouldn’t be diluted in any way.
Afternoon Session
We get going with four matches with the home star Luca Brecel on the main table first up. He takes on Daniel Wells in a held over qualifying match while on one of the other tables Stuart Bingham is on show. He has a potentially tricky test against Chris Wakelin. The other two matches in this first session of play sees Joe Perry taking on Oliver Lines and Li Hang going up against Tian Pengfei.
The second half of the afternoon session will see the man of the season so far, Kyren Wilson, on show when he faces the dangerous Thepchaiya Un-Nooh. Marco Fu is another high profile star on show in the afternoon. He plays Fergal O’Brien with the Shootout winner Michael Georgiou playing Allan Taylor and Anthony Hamilton meeting Zhang Jiankang.
Evening Session
There was meant to be a match for the world champion Mark Williams in this session but his withdrawal has left the schedule a little sparse. The defending champion Judd Trump begins his title defence with a held over qualifying match against Martin O’Donnell in a clash of two quarter finalists from last week with Peter Lines playing Paul Davison and Ryan Day meeting Yuan Sijun in the other matches.
There are three matches to follow those with Jack Lisowski a contender for the main table. He faces the Welsh player Duane Jones while Anthony McGill will look to get a win on the board when he goes up against Chris Totten. The other match of the day sees Zhang Anda going up against the talented Swiss player Alexander Ursenbacher.

Betting
This first round is not going to be the easiest to bet on with players coming back from China and jet lag being a big factor so I’m going to take betting fairly light to begin with and go with just the one match on the opening day which involves a player who was nowhere near China last week and should be fresh.
Peter Lines was a semi-finalist in the Paul Hunter Classic a month or so ago and while he hasn’t played since given the travelling that some of the tour have been doing that might not be a bad thing. He takes on Paul Davison who did well to beat Stephen Maguire in the qualifying match for this tournament but either side of that he has taken a few heavy beatings which isn’t ideal. Lines has won the two most recent matches between these two 4-1 and if he has any of the form he showed in Furth he should come through here fairly comfortably too.
