The first round of the French Open singles draws concludes across the Roland Garros complex on Tuesday while the doubles gets underway on what is a busy third day of action in the second Grand Slam of the year.
We saw some huge names on court on Monday and on Tuesday we will see the likes of Marin Cilic, Serena Williams, Simona Halep, Juan Martin del Potro, Maria Sharapova and Caroline Garcia grace the red dirt for the first time.
Day 2 Recap
Day 2 was not a good day for some of the big names. It was the day which saw the exit of the former champion Stan Wawrinka as well as Victoria Azarenka, Kiki Mladenovic and Anastasija Sevastova. Rafael Nadal was 2-0 up on a game Simone Bolelli when the rain came while the likes of Novak Djokovic, Richard Gasquet and Dominic Thiem powered through in the men’s draw. There were comfortable wins for Naomi Osaka, Madison Keys and Caroline Wozniacki in the women’s draw.
It was a dreadful day for our bets with Philipp Kohlschreiber and Nikoloz Basilashvili going down in four sets and Oceane Dodin barely able to find the court after going 2-0 up in the first set. Joao Sousa was two sets down when the rain came too so Monday was a day to forget.
Philippe Chatrier Court
Wimbledon finalist Marin Cilic opens up play on the show court on Tuesday when he takes on James Duckworth. Rafael Nadal is then back to finish his match with Simone Bolelli before the great Serena Williams is on court to take on Kristyna Pliskova. Tomas Berdych has a daunting task against Jeremy Chardy before the action concludes with number one seed Simona Halep taking on Alison Riske.
Suzanne Lenglen Court
The exciting Denis Shapovalov is first up on the second main court. He goes up against John Millman from Australia before Maria Sharapova plays her held over match from Monday. She takes on Richel Hogenkamp and they are followed by Caroline Garcia going up against Yingying Duan. It should be bombs away in the final match of the day on this court when Nicolas Mahut faces Juan Martin del Potro.
Court 1
Two former champions meet in a standout first round match to get things going on Court 1 when Garbine Muguruza takes on Svetlana Kuznetsova before Steve Johnson faces Adrian Mannarino. Another appealing first round match sees Julia Goerges facing Dominika Cibulkova in a match which won’t be lacking in power hitting with the action concluding with the clash between Leonardo Mayer and Julien Benneteau.
Court 3
A former finalist here gets everything going on Court 3 when Sam Stosur faces Yanina Wickmayer before British eyes will be on the court when Kyle Edmund plays Alex De Minaur. Ashleigh Barty is then up when she takes on Natalia Vikhlyantseva before the final match on the court sees Myrtille Georges going up against the American player Taylor Townsend.
Best of the Rest
As ever there are plenty of decent names on the courts around the grounds on Tuesday with Jack Sock out on Court 18 while Daris Gavrilova and Feliciano Lopez are on Court 6. Kevin Anderson, Fabio Fognini and Angelique Kerber form a decent cast list on Court 7 with plenty of other good players dotted out elsewhere too.

Men’s Betting
I’ll take a couple in the men’s draw on Tuesday with the first one being an Aljaz Bedene who needs to take advantage of his liking for the red dirt when he takes on a massively out of sorts Pablo Cuevas in the first round. Cuevas has put together a really poor run of results in recent times and must be arriving in Paris with little in the way of confidence. Bedene has made the final in Argentina and the semi-finals in Hungary this season and he had a couple of decent results in Rome a couple of weeks ago so he brings more winning energy with him here and at odds against this looks like a match he can win.
I will also take Feliciano Lopez to ease through. This isn’t his best surface but he has played some good matches on the clay this season, often going down in three sets when he has gone down. He now takes on the lucky loser Sergiy Stakhovsky who back in the day was a solid player but he is way past his best now. Prior to qualifying he had only won one match since Miami Open qualifying in March. He lost to Ilya Ivashka in qualifying for this and he has already been blown away by Dominic Thiem. I’m expecting a similar outcome for Lopez here.
Women’s Betting
I will go with just the one bet in the women’s draw on Tuesday too and it comes in that standout match of the day between Julia Goerges and Dominika Cibulkova. Cibulkova showed what she has got in Nuremburg last week when she made the final only to go down in three epic tiebreaks to Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. Goerges made the final of Charleston and has banged out Karolina Pliskova on the clay since then. I expect this to be very tight and three sets wouldn’t surprise me. Over 21.5 games looks a very likely outcome.
