2018 French Open Tennis – Day 8 Betting Preview

The second week of the French Open begins on Sunday with the two sets of singles draws now down to the last 16 stage. All the matches from here on in are on the two show courts so you get the feeling that the event is going to go up a notch now.

There is a decent cast list among the eight matches that are on show on the day so we should have an entertaining day of tennis to enjoy with our Sunday roasts and the like.

Day 7 Recap

It was a day of drama at Roland Garros on Saturday. David Goffin came through in five sets as did Fabio Fognini but it was a lot easier than that for Rafael Nadal, Marin Cilic and Juan Martin del Potro and in the women’s draw Serena Williams, Simona Halep, Maria Sharapova and Garbine Muguruza all eased through too.

Diego Schwartzman was another comfortable winner on the seventh day of competition which was good for our bets but sadly there was no joy with the two women’s bets which both lost. We also lost Kyle Edmund but the other three outright bets have made it safely into the second week.

Philippe Chatrier Court

US Open finalist Madison Keys is up first on the main court when she takes on Mihaela Buzarnescu for a place in the quarter final before arguably the match of the day is up when Dominic Thiem faces Kei Nishikori. Anett Kontaveit will look to build on her win over Petra Kvitova on Saturday when she takes on the US Open champion Sloane Stephens and then the action on Chatrier concludes with Fernando Verdasco going up against Novak Djokovic.

Suzanne Lenglen Court

The number two seed Alexander Zverev is opening the show on Suzanne Lenglen when he faces the capable Karen Khachanov before Barbora Strycova goes up against Yulia Putintseva in the women’s draw. David Goffin is on court for the third day in a row in the penultimate match of the day when he goes up against Marco Cecchinato and then Daria Kasatkina meets Caroline Wozniacki in what could be the pick of the women’s matches.

Men’s Betting

I’m going with bets in three of the four matches in the men’s draw on Sunday. The first one is a small bet on Karen Khachanov to beat Alexander Zverev. Zverev’s struggles in the Grand Slams have been well-documented and he has had to go five sets in his last two rounds so how much there is remaining in his tank is open to debate. Khachanov has had a much easier time of things and he has been hitting the ball as cleanly as anyone in this tournament. At 11/4 he’s worth a bet.

David Goffin is another one who goes into Sunday off the back of a five set win and like Zverev it remains to be seen what he has left when he takes on a Marco Cecchinato who took him the distance in Rome a couple of weeks ago. Goffin has twice gone the distance in this tournament. Cecchinato had a marathon win in the first round but he’s been on easy street since then. I’m not sure who I think will win this but I expect it to go beyond three sets.

I also expect the big match of the day to go into a fourth set at the very least too when Novak Djokovic takes on Fernando Verdasco. Their clay court meetings in the past have generally been quite tight and now we have the dynamic that Djokovic isn’t firing on all cylinders and Verdasco has just had one of his best wins in a Grand Slam for a good while. This looks like a match which could go the distance to me but I’m happy to settle for over 3.5 sets.

Women’s Betting

In the final women’s match of the day I like Daria Kasatkina to beat Caroline Wozniacki. Wozniacki has gone well in this tournament but clay is not her strongest service unlike her opponent who is very much at home on the red dirt. I give credit to Wozniacki for making it this far but she’s played nothing to date. Kasatkina is a massive step up for her whereas the Russian has faced two very competent opponents already. She should be tuned up for a battle but I’m not convinced she’ll need to be. I think the Russian could overwhelm Wozniacki here.
