The first pairings have been announced for the opening session of the Ryder Cup which gives us something to work with when we take one last look at the side markets that are on show across the weekend.
We have already covered who we think will win the Ryder Cup and looked through the two main point scorer markets for each side and now is the time to look at some of the lesser markets and seek some value. There are three bets which catch my eye.
Top European Wildcard
This is a four man market involving the four picks Thomas Bjorn chose to complete his team. His picks were Ian Poulter, Paul Casey, Sergio Garcia and Henrik Stenson and after the opening pairings were announced one man has an early advantage.
Paul Casey is the only man who is out on the opening session of play and while I expect the other three to feature in the second session of the day, there is no reason why Casey won’t have 36 holes to play. I thought heading into the competition that Bjorn was almost obliged to use Casey as often as he can, given the lengths he went to in order to get the Englishman to commit to his side again so I’m not overly surprised he is out early. Clearly the other three aren’t going to be involved too often and actually of the four you’d back Casey as most likely to win his singles point. Given he’s starting 5/2 looks big here.
Top American Rookie
There are only three American rookies in this Ryder Cup in the form of Justin Thomas, Bryson DeChambeau and Tony Finau which makes for a decent little market with just three selections.
Thomas is a warm favourite for this market but I wonder if he is really going to play all five matches with his wrist injury an obvious concern. That could open the door up to the other two, or give them a better chance at the very least. Finau has been picked for the opening fourballs and he might only play the fourballs and singles but if he can bag a couple of points in them that could be enough to deliver a nice price.

Correct Score
I always like a punt on the correct score and while all the build up is suggesting this will be the closest Ryder Cup yet it doesn’t always work out that way and I wouldn’t be at all surprised if a team gets on a roll and wins this by a fair margin.
I’ve already said I think Europe will win this competition and I think they have the edge in a couple of places. Their familiarity with the course will definitely help them but the last three or four holes are very unique and quirky and I would expect Europe to dominate these holes for much of the week. With that in mind they could open up a bit of a gap so the 16/1 on a 16-12 European win feels like it has a chance.
