There is one match left in the regular season of the Big Bash League, which takes place on Monday as the Melbourne Renegades finish off their campaign against a Brisbane Heat side who have it all to play for.
Not only will the Heat make the playoffs with a win here, but they would end up hosting the first game, but should they lose to the Renegades they will be watching on when the business end of the season gets underway later in the week.
Melbourne Renegades
It has been a season to forget for the Melbourne Renegades and not even a century from Aaron Finch could change their fortunes against the Sydney Sixers over the weekend. You would hope they have enough professional pride about them to want to win this game, and if they do, we saw they have the wood on the Brisbane Heat batting line up when they thrashed the Queensland outfit in the reverse meeting between the two teams.
That bowling unit will need to go well if the Renegades are to end their season with a consolation victory though because they are up against a potent batting line up, even if it is one which can be hit or miss. They will also need their senior batsmen to be counted as they are without a couple of big players with the bat as well. The good thing for the Renegades is they can attack this with freedom, safe in the knowledge they have nothing to lose.
Brisbane Heat
It remains to be seen how the Brisbane Heat will approach this match in terms of the quality of performance they provide. They have put in some shocking displays when the pressure hasn’t been on them so anything could happen here. The one positive would be that they thrashed the Melbourne Stars when they needed to win on Saturday and that should have given them a lot of confidence for this outing.
You get the feeling this match will be determined by how the Brisbane Heat side go with the bat though. They have already kept the Renegades to a low total in the competition once but made a mess of chasing it down. That in itself should give them the added fuel in the fire to get the job done here and make sure they extend their season. They will be looking to their three international batsmen to deliver the goods for them.
Team News
To their credit, the Melbourne Renegades have resisted the temptation to give a load of youngsters some exposure to this level and have named an unchanged squad from the previous match, which is the best options they have available.
It is probably less of a surprise that the Brisbane Heat are unchanged for this game and given the emphatic way they took care of the Melbourne Stars in their previous outing it would only be a late injury that would stop them playing the same XI.
Betting
I’ll go with a couple of bets for this match with the first of them coming in the over 310.5 runs. I think this will be a high scoring game because I think there are enough players in the Melbourne Renegades batting line up who with the freedom they have at their disposal in this match will deliver the goods and then it will be on the Heat to either chase down to extend their season or to have put up a decent amount to comfortable they can defend and keep their campaign alive. Both sides have better batsmen than bowlers so I like the over to cover here.
I’ll also take Cameron Boyce to bring in his player performance at 22.5. He took 4-15 when these two met in Brisbane last week and the only time in his last four matches he hasn’t taken two wickets on this ground was against the Melbourne Stars and there is probably no shame in that. If he can find a couple of wickets here then that covers the line but he’s a handy batsman down the order in his own right which could get the three needed with one wicket. A catch and a wicket works too so I’m happy to take the over here.
