The latest fixture list in the Premier League gets going on Saturday, and as ever we have the three kick off times with a couple of big matches on a day where all ends of the table are in the spotlight in a number of games.
We have to wait until Monday night to see if the leaders Liverpool can continue their march towards the title but there is still plenty to be interested in over what will be the better part of seven hours of action on Saturday.
Early Kick Off
The first match of the day is a London derby that will get the juices flowing for both Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur, when they meet at Stamford Bridge. This is one of a number of big matches in the coming weeks with regards to qualification for next season’s Champions League, with Chelsea able to put some significant distance between themselves and their London rivals with a win here. A Spurs win would tighten everything up and make it all even more competitive for the remaining weeks of the campaign.
3pm Matches
There are four matches in the usual 3pm time slot on Saturday afternoon and the bottom of the table is very much in focus in the majority of them. Bournemouth will look to ease their relegation concerns in one of those matches when they make the trip to Turf Moor to take on Burnley while two of the lowest scoring sides in the division will do battle at Selhurst Park where Crystal Palace host Newcastle United in a battle where the winner will all but secure Premier League football next term.
It is events at the top and the bottom under the microscope at Bramall Lane, where Sheffield United will look to enhance their Champions League claims when they play host to a Brighton and Albion side who should be fine this season, but who need two or three more wins to be sure. The other match sees Aston Villa looking to pull away from the bottom three when they warm up for next week’s Carabao Cup final with a trip to St Mary’s Stadium to face Southampton.
Late Game
We save the best for last once again, or at least that is what the league table is telling us, as the final match of the day sees third placed Leicester City hosting second placed Manchester City in what should be a really appealing game between two of the better footballing sides in the division. Leicester have been excellent value this season but they haven’t yet landed a blow on the two big boys and have a chance to do just that here. City have a huge trip to Real Madrid in the Champions League in midweek but they need to be focused on this match if they are to avoid defeat.
Betting
I don’t think this is the easiest card in the world so I’m not going to go too mad with it. There are a couple of sides, notably Sheffield United and Southampton and maybe even Crystal Palace who are very short but they are against opponents I’m in no massive rush to jump on which makes life difficult. I will take one bet though which comes in the clash at St Mary’s between Southampton and Aston Villa.
I like over 3 goals in that match. Southampton still don’t convince me at home but they are starting to get there but at the very least they are having a go now. Villa are pretty much forced to have a go here because of the situation they are in and with Jack Grealish in their ranks they are always a chance. It is hard to see Villa keeping a clean sheet without Tyrone Mings so goals should come quite naturally here. Neither side have issues finding the net so I like over 3 goals in this one.
