2019-20 Premier League – Sunday 5th July Matches Tips, TV and Betting Preview

The Premier League is gearing up for an exciting conclusion as far as the race for the European spots and the battle to avoid the drop is concerned, and on Sunday four more matches which could shape both landscapes take place on a bumper day of football.

We are used to Sundays only containing the two matches in normal times but we have double that this time and all four matches are live on TV in the UK, so there is no need to miss any of the action over the course of the better part of nine hours from start to finish.

Sunday’s fixtures are as follows: (UK kick off and TV in brackets)

Burnley v Sheffield United (12.00 – Sky Main Event/Sky Premier League/Sky One/Pick)

Newcastle United v West Ham United (14.15 – Sky Main Event & Sky Premier League)

Liverpool v Aston Villa (16.30 – Sky Main Event & Sky Premier League)

Southampton v Manchester City (19.00 – BBC One)

The day begins with the middle of the table and the odd flirt with the bottom of the league as two sides who have impressed with their battle against supposed bigger sides this season get the action underway when Burnley host Sheffield United. Both teams can still snatch a Europa League space for next season but you would think only the winner will actually remain in that hunt. The attention then turns to St James’ Park where a Newcastle United side who are suddenly free-scoring host a West Ham United who will be seeking a second successive victory to ease themselves away from the danger zone.

Aston Villa will hope that West Ham don’t pick up a win and that they do when they face the daunting trip to Anfield in the third match of the day. Liverpool are likely to be smarting from a tonking in the week while Villa desperately need some points if they are to stay up. The visitors might have picked the wrong time to go to Anfield to be fair. The action then concludes at St Mary’s Stadium where Manchester City will look to build on their fine win over the champions in midweek when they take on a Southampton side who are nicely ensconced in mid-table.

Betting

There are three bets that I like on the card on Sunday and we’ll begin right from the off where I’m expecting a cagey first period between Burnley and Sheffield United. We’ve seen not just prior to lockdown but since it that these two teams don’t score too many goals. In the main they don’t concede too many either although Sheffield United have leaked a few it has to be said. Burnley remain without some key attacking individuals and I’m not sure Sheffield United are exactly going to go gung-ho here. This has all the hallmarks of being one of those games where both sides take 45 minutes to get into the swing of it and then the better football is played in the second half. I’ll revert back to under 0.5 first half goals for a bet here.

I’ve got to think Liverpool are going to be seething at the performance they put in at the Etihad Stadium on Thursday evening and that might be bad news for Aston Villa who could be in the firing line of something a bit nasty here. Champions generally want to prove they are the best side in the league after winning a title and the Reds didn’t do that on Thursday. They may well do here. Aston Villa are nothing special and are really struggling for goals at the minute. They are hardly likely to succeed very much on that score here it has to be said. Liverpool might also have a point to prove because it was Villa who took advantage of the absence of senior Liverpool players in the Carabao Cup earlier in the season and I expect a dominating home win here, one which can be put in place in the first half and remain intact at the end.

Manchester City have shown that although the title has gone, they are not letting up, and neither should they with two trophies to be fought for over the next seven weeks or so. That might not be a good thing for Southampton who have gone well on their travels since the restart but who just can’t seem to buy a result at home whether fans are in the ground or not. Defensively they have just started to come apart at the seams a little and they are surely going to be heavily tested here and I just don’t see them breaking through this City rearguard enough. This is another match where I expect the better team to be leading at the break and at the end.
