2019-20 Premier League – Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Manchester City Tips and Betting Preview

The first of the Christmas fixture lists in the Premier League draws to a close on Friday evening when Wolverhampton Wanderers host the champions Manchester City in what looks like a wonderful way to conclude what was a good round of games in the top flight.

With Liverpool seemingly away and gone City could be forgiven for thinking they are playing for second place, while Wolves are looking to better what was a perfectly acceptable first season back in with the big boys so this one is nicely poised.

Wolverhampton Wanderers

Ever since they returned to the top flight, Wolves have taken the game to the big teams and quite often come out on top whenever they have faced them. That was the case in the reverse fixture between these two at the Etihad Stadium when Wanderers ran out winners, and they will be out to complete what would be a pretty remarkable double in this contest. Wolves will go back to fifth in the table if they are able to win the match.

Only Liverpool have been beaten fewer times than Wolves this season. If you was to be critical of the Molineux men it would be that they have drawn half of their matches but it is tough to be too hard on them given that they have juggled their Premier League campaign with a tilt at the Europa League. When you factor that into the equation they are going pretty well this term despite being a little more vulnerable at the back than we might have expected.

Manchester City

It hasn’t been the greatest campaign for Manchester City thus far but they gave us a reminder that when they are at their best they can make anyone look tame when they beat Leicester City last weekend. They are under huge pressure to keep winning just in case Liverpool do crack at the top end of the Premier League and certainly defensively you get the impression they know that whenever they take to the pitch.

I say it hasn’t been the best season for the Citizens, that is because they have already lost four matches this term, but they head to Wolverhampton with successive wins under their belt and we saw them come on very strong in the second half of last season, and it would be a brave man to back against that happening again. This will be a good test of them given the injuries they have and the dangerous opponent they face.

Team News

Nuno Espirito Santo supposedly has no new injury problems to deal with but given that his side head to Anfield less than 48hrs after this match he is likely to have to make changes to his team at some point. It remains to be seen whether that is here or not.

City remain without the likes of John Stones and David Silva but there is better news in the form of Sergio Aguero. He has recovered from injury enough to potentially be on the bench ahead of returning to the side at the weekend.

Betting

I think we’re going to see a few goals here. With Wolves going to Anfield on Sunday they will either give this their all to try and pick up points or they will make changes to their side and save themselves for that game. If it is the former we’ve seen they can trouble City and if it is the latter then the champions are likely to swamp all over them with the quality they have in their ranks.

City are a proud bunch and they’ll be desperate to get back at Wolves after the problems they have given them in the recent past. Wolves are missing a key defender in Willy Boly so there is an area to exploit for the visitors. City don’t convince defensively at the minute and Wolves have the quality up front to exploit that. The goal line here is three goals but I’m not sure that will be high enough in a match where both teams should be having a go.
