The Championship weekend continues with the majority of the matches in the latest slate of games taking place on what looks like another competitive Saturday afternoon up and down the country in the second tier.
As with most Saturdays this campaign we have a televised match to get things started and then the rest of the games come along at 3pm, including a couple of intriguing battles and storylines so we should be suitably entertained.
Saturday’s fixtures are as follows: (3pm unless stated)
Charlton Athletic v Cardiff City (12.30pm)
Blackburn Rovers v Barnsley
Brentford v Reading
Bristol City v Nottingham Forest
Derby County v Preston North End
Huddersfield Town v Birmingham City
Luton Town v Leeds United
Stoke City v Wigan Athletic
Swansea City v Millwall
West Bromwich Albion v Sheffield Wednesday
Big Matches
The televised action comes from The Valley where Lee Bowyer takes his Charlton Athletic side into battle against a Cardiff City team who begin life under Neil Harris, one of the stranger managerial appointments of recent times. The top three are all in action on Saturday afternoon as well. West Bromwich Albion host Sheffield Wednesday while Preston North End head to Derby County and Leeds United head to Kenilworth Road to face Luton Town.
Best of the Rest
At the other end of the scale bottom of the lot Barnsley make their way to Ewood Park to take on Blackburn Rovers while Stoke City will look to pull closer to escaping the relegation zone when they host a Wigan Athletic side who they can draw to within a point of if they win. Huddersfield Town will look to continue to pull away from danger when they host Birmingham City while two attractive sides meet at Griffin Park where Reading are the visitors to a classy Brentford outfit. Seventh host sixth as well as Bristol City take on Nottingham Forest.
Betting
I’ll go with just the one on what is not the easiest card ever known to man. I must admit Blackburn Rovers were tempting me but I was there when they slipped up against a lowly ranked side and Charlton got a result there as well so that is putting me off backing Rovers at odds on. In the end I’m focusing my attention on the game at the Bet365 Stadium where Stoke City take on Wigan Athletic.
I think we’ve seen enough in the last few weeks to suggest that the Potters are in a false position. They were beginning to show signs of that under Nathan Jones with those wins against Swansea City and Fulham and then in their first match under Michael O’Neill they showed it again with a thumping 4-2 win at Barnsley. They now host Wigan whose appalling away record in this division is no secret. They have taken just two points from eight games on the road this season and are the worst away side in the league. Furthermore they have conceded three times as many as they’ve scored in that time. Stoke may not enjoy playing at home these days but if they are going to come away from danger this is a must win game. There should be a little gloom lifted with O’Neill in charge and I expect Stoke to win accordingly.
