The knockout stages of the Africa Cup of Nations begins on Friday evening when the first two of the round of 16 matches take place over in Egypt, with two of the leading lights in the event looking to book their spots in the quarter final.
They are Morocco and Senegal, who will be favourites to come through the draw against favourable opponents but you never know how teams are going to react to the pressure of the knockout stages at any time.
Morocco vs Benin (17.00)
Our pre-tournament pick Morocco will be the first side looking to make it into the quarter finals when they go up against one of the success stories in the tournament thus far in the relatively lowly form of Benin.
Morocco haven’t been amazing in this tournament thus far but they have won all three matches and you can never dispute a team who do that but I think their followers would like to see a little more from them, especially in attacking areas where we’ve not yet seen the best of Hakim Ziyech. Given that Benin’s last two matches were both 0-0 I don’t think we should expect a goalfest in this one but I do believe Morocco have enough to win the game so them to win and under 3.5 goals looks a decent enough bet at a very acceptable price.
Uganda vs Senegal (20.00)
It will be the turn of Senegal to look to qualifying for the latter stages of the competition in the second knockout match on Friday. They face a Uganda side who have done very well to get this far and who will be hoping to cause an upset.
I don’t really see an upset coming here though. Senegal look a little too strong in my eyes and even though they didn’t win their group I still think they’ve got enough to come through here. There is a danger that Uganda are overrated on their win over DR Congo in the opening game. The form hasn’t really been franked since then and we saw how easily Egypt saw off Uganda last time out. I see no reason why Senegal won’t do that as well but as with the game above I’m not expecting an avalanche of goals. Senegal and under 3.5 goals will do me.
