2019 ATP Cincinnati: Western & Southern Open Tennis Final – Daniil Medvedev vs David Goffin Tips and Betting Preview

The final of the ATP Cincinnati Western & Southern Open takes place on Sunday evening and we are guaranteed a first time Masters 1000 event winner as Daniil Medvedev takes on David Goffin for the biggest title of their career to date.

This has been a week of surprises, good tennis and plenty of big hitting and it would be a huge change on what we’ve seen so far if we don’t see more of the same in this final. The winner here will go into the US Open in wonderful shape.

Daniil Medvedev

There is no hotter man on the ATP Tour at the present time than the Russian star Daniil Medvedev. This is the third Sunday in succession that he will be battling it out for a title. Having lost out to Nick Kyrgios in Washington and Rafael Nadal last week in Montreal, the youngster will be itching to get his hands on silverware here and take a title into the US Open with him. Either way he’ll go there full of confidence.

I guess given that he beat the number one seed Novak Djokovic in the semi-final, there is a case to be made that Medvedev deserves to win this title but he’ll know he has to go out and win it. His win over Djokovic was impressive enough but the way he switched into overdrive and took the racquet out of the hands of the world number one was fantastic to watch, sparking hopes that he could be the man to break the dominance of the big three.

David Goffin

This isn’t the first time David Goffin has gone deep in a big ATP tournament but he has yet to get over the line in one, and while he is a regular inside the top 20 in the world, he will know these opportunities don’t come around for him too often, so there is pressure on him to deliver the goods here, in case it is a while before the chance comes around for him again.

I wouldn’t say Goffin has been brilliant in this tournament but there is certainly an argument to me made that suggests he has gotten better the longer it has gone on. He will probably need to improve again if he is to come out on top here but he hits a clean ball when he is on form and that is never a bad thing in these quicker conditions that we’ve had this week.

Head to Head

These two men have met twice and they were both this year. Both meetings came in the Grand Slams with Medvedev beating Goffin in Australia while the Belgian got his revenge at Wimbledon, when he took care of the Russian in five sets. Medvedev had led 2-1 in that match so had won five of the six sets they have played prior to losing the final two at SW19. You would suggest that history is slightly on the side of the Russian here.

Betting

I don’t think there can be any doubt that David Goffin has a fitness edge on Daniil Medvedev in this final. Medvedev has played three whole weeks and that has to catch up with him at some point. Goffin didn’t play in the quarter final of this tournament and his semi-final ended four hours prior to Medvedev who was on court for longer too.

Despite that, I don’t see the Russian coming this far and laying down now so I’m expecting a pretty close final here. Goffin can give as good as he gets and we saw the destructive power that Medvedev has in his semi-final win. I would imagine there is a fair chance of this going three sets but even two close ones gets us beyond 22.5 games and that’s how I’m playing this final.
