We have reached the quarter finals of the Western & Southern Open out in the #ATP Cincinnati event, the latest in the Masters 1000 tournaments. It has been a strange week so far and it will be interesting to see how Friday plays out with all four last eight matches on the one day.
Many big names arrived in Ohio for this tournament but just five days into it we only have one of the top eight seeds left in the draw, which is the defending champion Novak Djokovic. All eyes will be on him to see if he retains the title and the other half of the draw where someone is going to make significant ground in their career.
Thursday Recap
The big shock on Thursday came when Roger Federer was mercilessly dumped out of the tournament by the Russian qualifier Andrey Rublev. The Russian has previous in an American hard court event but even so that was a seismic shock. Elsewhere there were comfortable wins for Novak Djokovic, David Goffin, Roberto Bautista Agut and Daniil Medvedev among a few others.
That all meant that it was good and bad on the betting front for us. Unfortunately the speculative punt opposing Daniil Medvedev never truly got off the ground as he was way too good for Jan-Lennard Struff but at the same time we won cosily on Roberto Bautista Agut who was equally as emphatic a victor against Miomir Kecmanovic to secure the tiniest of profit on the day.
Center Court
There are two men’s matches on the Center Court on Friday, one in the day session and one in the night one. It is a women’s match that kicks things off in the day but then after that Roberto Bautista Agut and Richard Gasquet will meet for the third time in 2019, with the Spaniard having won their previous two battles this year. Another pair who have met this year meet in the night session match as the defending champion Novak Djokovic takes on Lucas Pouille in a repeat of the Australian Open semi-final, which the Serb won all too easily.
Grandstand
It is the same situation on Grandstand as one men’s match takes place in the day session and then another one at night. The day session sees one of the surprise packages of the tournament Yoshihito Nishioka taking on David Goffin for the second time in a couple of weeks after the pair met in Washington a fortnight ago. The night session match sees the two remaining Russians meet for the first time when Andrey Rublev attempts to back up his win over Roger Federer when he takes on countryman Daniil Medvedev for a place in the semi-final.
Betting
This is a fairly tricky night to bet on because the lines on many of the favourites are probably one game too many on the handicap and I wouldn’t be in a rush to take a risk against their opponents, particularly in this week of all weeks where being a favourite looks to be something of a poisoned chalice judging by the number of outsiders who have been coming through the draw.
I’m going to back that trend to continue though and take on David Goffin once again, with the man who beat him in Washington in Yoshihito Nishioka. I’m convinced Goffin is there for the taking this week. Twice players have served for sets against him and collapsed but that can only happen so many times before it catches up with him. Nishioka has played some nice stuff this week and looks to be covering the court really well. I’m not convinced his race is run yet and so the 13/8 on him winning the match is worthy of support.
