The second round of the ATP Miami Open, the second Masters 1000 event of the year concludes on Saturday when the bottom half of the draw play down to the last 32 on what should be another exciting day in Florida.
Friday saw the Indian Wells champion Dominic Thiem come and go and on Saturday it will be the turn of Roger Federer and Alexander Zverev to attempt to negotiate their first match of the tournament.
Stadium Court
We actually have a men’s match to start off on the Hard Rock Stadium court when Stanislas Wawrinka takes on Filip Krajinovic who looks in fine form at the minute. We then pause for a women’s match before the great Roger Federer begins his campaign for another Miami title when he faces the qualifier Radu Albot. The night session is reserved for the men too with the wildcard David Ferrer taking on an out-of-sorts looking Alexander Zverev.
Grandstand
The women get us started over on the Grandstand on Saturday but when the men get to take to the court where should be treated to a decent enough match with Grigor Dimitrov going up against Feliciano Lopez in a battle of the one-handed backhands. Later on in the afternoon out pre-tournament bet Stefanos Tsitsipas takes to the court when he goes up against the lucky loser Mackenzie McDonald.
Court 1
The day actually begins with a Brit in action over on Court 1 when another lucky loser, Dan Evans, faces the rising star that is Denis Shapovalov for a place in the last 32.Kevin Anderson is then due to make his return from injury when he takes on Jaume Munar with the third men’s match in a row seeing Andrey Rublev continue his good recent run by facing a Marin Cilic who looks to be in a bit of limbo in his career at the present time. There is a fourth men’s match on this court as Miomir Kecmanovic takes on Frances Tiafoe.
Best of the Rest
As ever at this stage of a big tournament there are plenty of big names on show around the grounds for the fans in Miami to enjoy as well as those of us who will be watching on Amazon Prime. Karen Khachanov is our outright bet so our eyes will be on him but there are also Diego Schwartzman, Daniil Medvedev, Guido Pella and David Goffin looking to treat the crowds to some entertaining tennis.

Betting
It is outsiders all the way for me on Saturday with four bets across the card. They begin with the British player on show in Dan Evans. I think he can come out on top against a Denis Shapovalov who could probably do with faster conditions than these. The Canadian had a couple of decent enough wins in Indian Wells last week but he hasn’t pulled up many trees in 2019 unlike Evans who is playing well and winning plenty of matches. It might be that he has played too many matches this term but this is a big opportunity for the Brit and I’ll back him to take advantage of that.
Kevin Anderson is coming back from injury this week and could be vulnerable to Jaume Munar who looks to have conditions to his liking here. Munar had a decent first round win over Prajnesh Gunneswaran and can build on that against the South African who might need a week or two to get into his best stride. I would probably have left this alone in faster conditions but in these surroundings the Spaniard has to be the call at 6/4.
The same thing applies with Feliciano Lopez really. He takes on a Grigor Dimitrov for whom a shoulder injury has had him out of action since the Australian Open and that makes me like Lopez here. Lopez gutsed it out against Benoit Paire earlier in the week and you would think that the longer this one goes on the more likely the Spaniard is to win. Dimitrov might ease himself back in here ahead of the clay season and at 6/4 I think Lopez is good value to send him packing here.
Finally I see no reason to suggest that Frances Tiafoe should be as short as he is against Miomir Kecmanovic. I get that the American has home advantage although how much of one that is in these slower conditions I’m unsure. The Serbian youngster looks a star of the future. He has already adjusted to the slower conditions with his win over Ernests Gulbis in the first round and can get back to emulating his run to the last eight in Indian Wells last week with a win over a Tiafoe who has barely won a match since the Australian Open.
