It is semi-final day at the ATP Miami Open on Friday with both matches taking place on the main court at the Hard Rock Stadium as the two places in the final of the second Masters 1000 series event of the year are decided.
As ever at this stage of the season we have a couple of surprise packages who have made it through to this stage along with the defending champion John Isner and arguably the greatest player the game has ever seen.
Day Session
John Isner vs Felix Auger-Aliassime
The first semi-final is a North American tussle as John Isner looks to take his title defence into the Championship game when he goes up against the teenager from Canada in Felix Auger-Aliassime who is appearing at this stage of a Masters 1000 event for the first time.
Isner has battled hard to make it through to this stage having won all but one of the sets he has been victorious in, in a tiebreak scenario while Auger-Aliassime has come through a couple of titanic tussles along the way himself but has mixed power with silky movement in what has been a coming of age week.
I’m expecting a close match here between two men who won’t be losing their serve very often and who could easily battle this one out over three sets. Backing over 25.5 games in Isner matches this week will have yielded a nice profit. I’m riding that again here.

Night Session
Roger Federer vs Denis Shapovalov
Two exciting stars meet in what should be a pulsating second semi-final under the lights of the Hard Rock Stadium as the great Roger Federer goes up against the talented Canadian ace Denis Shapovalov for a place in the final on Sunday.
Federer has looked awesome so far in this tournament while Shapovalov has been made to work hard for his success this week, regularly coming from a set down to good opponents to win. You just wonder whether he will be able to give a set start and come back to turn him over. The natural logic would suggest he won’t be able to do that.
I’m expecting Federer to win this and to show the young Canadian a bit of a tennis lesson like he has done to Krajinovic and Anderson in the previous two rounds. The -3.5 handicap is a little short though but under 22.5 games is a nice enough price and gives us enough margin in a 2-0 Federer win for one of the sets to be close. That is my method of attack on this match.
