It is the final day of the ATP Tour season on Sunday and if the seeds are anything to go by, we will be treated to two surprise finals of the ATP World Tour Finals inside the o2 as two doubles pairs and two singles players go for glory.
The top four in both the singles and doubles rankings have been sent packing so there is a massive opportunity for both a pair and a singles player to bank a lot of cash and a hugely important title in the season.
Pierre-Hugues Herbert & Nicolas Mahut vs Raven Klaasen & Michael Venus
The final of the doubles competition is played first on the last day and it sees the excellent French pairing of Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut taking on the team who for many are the surprise package in the doubles draw in Raven Klaasen and Michael Venus.
The hope is that this will be a fantastic final and a real showpiece for the doubles game. It might well be the latter but it is hard to see past the French pair in this match. They have looked awesome in this tournament so far and are yet to drop a set in their four wins. Klaasen and Venus should be competitive, especially with the confidence of beating the number one pairing in the world in the semi-final, and we might see a couple of close sets but I don’t see anything other than a French win here. At around 2/5 though I’m not all that interested in backing them.
Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Dominic Thiem
The singles final would have expected to have involved at least one of Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer or Rafael Nadal but as it is it contains none of them as Stefanos Tsitsipas takes on Dominic Thiem for the title.
These two men have been the best two players of the week and now they’ll battle it out to see who the top dog actually is. Thiem heads in with a 4-2 career record over his Greek foe, including in the recent Beijing final but it has been a while since Tsitsipas has played this week on the big stage, if he has ever played this well. The only time he has dropped a set was when he pulled out the very best from Rafael Nadal. Thiem has beaten Djokovic and Federer this week and looks in awesome touch.
This final could genuinely go either way but I’ve liked how Thiem has played this week. He has delivered some brilliant performances. Tsitsipas has gone well but Daniil Medvedev and Alexander Zverev never turned up against him, Rafael Nadal beat him and Federer earned himself a dozen break points but converted only one. That makes me think that as well as he’s played, Tsitsipas might be slightly overrated here. I’ll take Thiem here.
