The fourth round of the Australian Open singles events begins on what looks like a wonderful day of tennis inside Melbourne Park on Sunday as the business end of the first major of the season rapidly approaches.
There is a wonderful looking card for Sunday’s matches and with only eight singles games over the course of the day there is a feeling that each and every one of them is an event in its own right, which is just how it should be.
Rod Laver Arena
It is the women’s draw which gets us underway on Sunday when Petra Kvitova will look to continue her good form when she takes on a youngster who appears to care little about reputation in the form of Amanda Anisimova. The intriguing clash between Ash Barty and Maria Sharapova follows them before Rafael Nadal is back on court when he concludes the day session against the Czech star Tomas Berdych.
The night session begins with the match that everyone is waiting to see when Roger Federer takes on the classy young buck Stefanos Tsitsipas in what could be a real humdinger if the Greek star lives up to the billing. The final match of the day on the main court sees Sloane Stephens facing off against Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in another good looking clash.
Margaret Court Arena
After a couple of doubles matches in the various pairs competitions there are two singles matches slated on the second court on Sunday. The first of them sees Danielle Collins going up against Angelique Kerber before the sole men’s match on show on this court sees Roberto Bautista Agut looking to continue his good recent form when he faces Marin Cilic who might well feel he is free rolling having got out of jail in the previous round.
Melbourne Arena
There are a bunch of doubles matches on the third court with actually some good pairs and decent names among them but mixed in there is also a men’s singles match, which will see the former semi-finalist Grigor Dimitrov taking on the American player Frances Tiafoe who will be aiming to reach the quarter final of a Grand Slam for the very first time.

Men’s Betting
There is just one bet for me in the men’s draw on Sunday and it comes in the form of Marin Cilic, who has I said above might believe he is free rolling in this tournament from here on in. I guess having survived a couple of five set matches Bautista Agut might be thinking similar but he never came from two sets down in those games. In fact, in one of them he led by two sets and crawled over the line. Cilic holds a 4-1 head to head lead over the Spaniard and in his four wins he hasn’t dropped a set. He might drop a set here but I expect him to make it through.
Women’s Betting
I’m expecting a long match when Ash Barty and Maria Sharapova go at it. Both these women love a bit of a tear up and they have both been hitting the ball very sweetly indeed in this competition and I certainly don’t expect that to change here. This one really has the feel of a three set epic about it and if that is the case then there should be plenty more than 21.5 games in it. That line is low enough that one close set and a medium sized other one will do the job too so I’m happy to be on the over here.
