We are down the semi-finals at the Fever-Tree Championships and we have a last four line up at Queens Club that absolutely nobody could have predicted, but there are plenty of stories to be enhanced over the weekend of the ATP 500 event.
It was a terrible day for the seeded players on the main court on Friday with the number one seed Stefanos Tsitsipas being knocked out, much to our joy having taken him on, while Milos Raonic bit the dust too. It leaves two of the next generation facing two veterans in the semis on Saturday.
Daniil Medvedev vs Gilles Simon
The opening semi-final sees the Russian star Daniil Medvedev in action when he takes on Gilles Simon in a clash of styles and experience with one of them progressing through to his first Queens final come the end of the contest.
Medvedev was on easy street against Diego Schwartzman in the quarter final but I expect him to have to battle a bit more here assuming Gilles Simon has enough in his legs after a three-hour marathon in the last round. Simon is more naturally suited to this surface. He is a former quarter finalist at Wimbledon which highlights his grass court credentials. Ultimately Medvedev could well have the class to win this but Simon can stay within 4.5 games.
Felix Auger-Aliassime vs Feliciano Lopez
The second semi-final is very much a case of the new breed against the seasoned veteran when Felix Auger-Aliassime takes on the former champion Feliciano Lopez who is looking for his place in a third Queens final.
The Lopez revival has been surprising this week given his form this year although he has always been a good player on the grass. I wonder whether his partnership with Andy Murray this week is inspiring him but either way I expect his run to end here. It might need a couple of tiebreaks to do it but Auger-Aliassime is the real deal in my eyes and the way he dealt with the Kyrgios nonsense earlier in the week spoke volumes of his temperament. He has destroyed Grigor Dimitrov and Stefanos Tsitsipas this week, maybe not players with the grass court pedigree of Lopez, but I still expect the Canadian to come through here without dropping a set.
